From diamonds to Dodos - new additions to the gallery
Replicas of some of the worlds biggest diamonds and the recently identified bones of the famous extinct bird go on display in time for the Christmas break. Museum staff were adding new objects to the World Bays gallery today.
Dodo bones
While moving skeletal material betweens stores recently, staff decided to get a box of twelve dodo bones more accurately identified. Bolton Museum’s David Craven sent images of the twelve to world-renowned dodo expert Dr Julian Hume at the Natural History Museum, London. Dr Hume identified all the bones, including rarer elements from the wing and shoulder (legs are by far the most commonly found bits of dodos). Of the twelve, one was not a dodo at all, it was actually from a species of giant tortoise! Dodo’s were natives of Mauritius, and the eleven bones have gone on display in the Africa Bay.

Did dodos help rare trees survive?
Quick-read this article:
The last dodo became extinct in Mauritius in 1681. Researcher Stanley Temple in the mid-1970s said this caused a threat to the local Calvaria major Settlers on the small tropical island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean in the early 1500s found a most unusual bird. It was as large as a turkey, of ungainly build, with short curly tail feathers and tiny wings. Because it had no fear of humans, the Portuguese named it doudo Sailors and settlers slaughtered these dodos in large numbers. Pigs introduced to the island voraciously ate the birds' eggs. The last dodo was killed in 1681. Also on Mauritius at the time was a tree known as Calvaria major . It was common on the island then, but by the 1970s only 13 living Calvaria trees were known. They were all more than 300 years old. Though they produced healthy looking seeds each year, none ever managed to germinate. The trees had puzzled botanists for centuries, for their numbers had begun to decline and no new trees were taking root. Calvaria major seemed destined for extinction like the dodo.

Darwin Day, Dodos, Intelligent Design and Deity
    Something for Everyone This Weekend
The birthday of Charles Darwin, the man known as the father of evolution, will be celebrated nationwide this weekend. Darwin Day is the celebration of the birth of Charles Robert Darwin. Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England on February 12, 1809.
"The objective of Darwin Day Celebration is to encourage existing institutions worldwide, such as municipalities, public and private schools, colleges and universities, libraries, museums, churches, private organizations and individuals to celebrate Science and Humanity every year, on, or near, February 12, Darwin's birthday!" (www.darwinday.org)
Kansas University assistant research professor Steven Case, emphasizes that the purpose of the university's Darwin Day events scheduled for this weekend are not to "deify" Darwin, but to do a better job of explaining science to the public in an accessible way. Events will feature a person dressed as a giant dodo bird roaming the campus and, wrapping up the day, students can compete in a costume contest preceding the viewing of "Flock of the Dodos".

13 November 2007 How would you like a peek at the world’s oldest gynaecological papyrus? What about a long extinct dodo? Care to commune with a dead philosopher? All this and more is waiting for the intrepid visitor to the collections of UCL with a free afternoon and a sense of adventure. … Over the years, the UCL has amassed more than half a million artefacts and specimens. Much of this material is available to the public and all the collections are free of charge. NoCrowds spent an afternoon at UCL recently and now ranks the collections as one of the top undervalued attractions for visitors to London. The first stop on our self-guided tour was the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology. … What makes the Petrie so interesting is the way the “stuff” of daily life in the Nile Valley sit alongside some of the greatest finds of Egyptian archaeology. Funny drawing on small chips of limestone, think of scratch paper, can be found near a fragment of Egypt’s oldest calendar. … While the quality of the Petrie collection compares favourably with the Cairo and British Museums, unlike those immensely popular institutions, the Petrie was completely empty for the duration of our hour-long visit. Plans are underway to move the collection to purpose built galleries in a new University building which will do much to improve the Petrie’s profile and accessibility so if you want to see mummies without kiddies, get over to the Petrie sooner as opposed to later.

The Dodo Raphus cucullatus ) was a flightless bird that was endemic to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Related to pigeons and doves , it stood about a metre (three feet ) tall, lived on fruit and nested on the ground. The dodo has been extinct since the mid-to-late 17th century. It is commonly used as the archetype of an extinct species because its extinction occurred during recorded human history, and was directly attributable to human activity. The adjective phrase "as dead as a dodo" means undoubtedly and unquestionably dead. The verb phrase "to go the way of the dodo" means to become extinct or obsolete, to fall out of common usage or practice, or to become a thing of the past.

    About Mauritius
Old Print of a Dodo The dodo was a flightless bird native only to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The dodo was a flightless member of the pigeon family. Fully grown dodos weighted about 23 kg (50 pounds). Around 1505 the Portuguese became the first Europeans to discover the dodo. By 1681 it had been driven to extinction by humans and the feral dogs, pigs, rats, and monkeys introduced by Europeans to Mauritius. The dodo was not the only Mauritian bird driven to extinction in recent centuries. Of the 45 bird species originally found, only 21 still survive. Two bird species closely related to the dodo also became extinct: the Réunion solitaire (raphus solitarius) . by 1746, and the Rodrigues solitaire (pezophaps solitaria ) by 1790. Reports of sightings of living dodos in the 1990s on Mauritius prompted William J. Gibbons to mount expeditions to search for them. None were found.

Skip to next paragraph Image courtesy of Errol Fuller Enlarge this Image Museum Naturalis, via European Pressphoto Agency Scientists have relied on a few descriptions, preserved skins and the odd bone to describe the dodo, extinct for more than 300 years. Bones found recently on its home, Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, may allow scientists to reconstruct the ecological world of the dodo before humans arrived and it departed. The New York Times The stocky flightless bird became extinct at the end of the 1600's, less than two centuries after European explorers discovered its home, the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius . Beyond passing descriptions, little evidence of the bird has survived — a preserved skin here, an isolated leg bone there.

There is very little solid evidence of the dodo’s appearance. The head and foot in the Museum represent the most complete remains of a single dodo. Many other museums have dodo skeletons, but these are composites, made up from the bones of different birds. Top

In the age of exploration man discovered wonderful creatures on every beach on which he landed. One of the creatures they found was the Dodo. The Dodo The bird was known by the common name 'Dodo', plural either 'Dodos' or 'Dodoes', alternative name 'Dronte'. Perhaps the name is derived from:

    Also used were:
    • Walgvogel or Walghvogel : nauseating bird (these are all Dutch- and German-based names) Doudo or Doudou : foolish and simple, simpleton (as the Portuguese and Spanish visitors called them)
