Main Flock of Dodos Filmmaker Admits Film is Wrong Robert Crowther On this episode of ID The Future we expose just one of the many falsehoods in Flock of Dodos , and report a grudging admission from the filmmaker that his film is wrong. In the film, storyteller Randy Olson tries his best to discredit intelligent design, but he only ends up discrediting himself by showing how far he is willing to stretch the truth to hoax his audience. Flock of Dodos makes a number of false assertions about scientists and institutions researching the theory of intelligent design. The CSC has launched a webpage, www.hoaxofdodos.com , detailing the false facts in the film. Reminder: Darwin Day, Monday, February 12, ID The Future will podcast a special 30 minute program in honor of Darwin's birthday. The program features two short lectures from CSC senior fellows Dr. John West and Dr. Jonathan Wells. Click here to listen.

How did the dodos become extinct?
    Answer
The flightless Dodo, related to pigeons, was native to the Island of Mauritious. Like all members of the pigeon family it was placid by nature. When the Europeans came to the islands in 1598, they interpreted its quiet confiding nature as stupidity. That led to it being called a dodo, which is Portuguese for simpleton. It was relentlessly hunted for food and sport. The young fat squabs were killed for their high fat content, the fat then rendered to extract oil for lamps. Introduced pigs and dogs ate its eggs and killed youngsters. By 1691, eighty years after its discovery, the dodo was extinct, a lasting emblem to man's predatory exploitation of nature. Related Links

Habitat
Although many pictures and stories place the dodo along the shores of Mauritius, it was actually a forest-dwelling bird. The island of Mauritius is home to a variety of biomes, such as plains, small mountains, forests, and reefs all along the shores. However, the dodo made its home primarily in the forest. Flock of Dodos
No, I don't mean Randy Olson's self-indulgent documentary. Funny though it was, it gave too much credibility to the creationists. Rather, I'm strongly recommending a short little book by Barrett Brown and Jon P. Alston, (Cambridge House, New York). Brown is apparently an Austinite though I don't think I've ever met him. Alston is a UT alumnus, showing that there is some hope for our students. Flock of Dodos is the funniest book on ID I've read in a long time. (Well, Brown writes for National Lampoon Cracked Jest Our local creationists, Koons and Budziszewski, get the Full Monty for their worship of Dembski (pp. 86 -88). It's unfortunateand embarrassingthat the homophobic Budziszewski keeps on getting identified as a member of the Philosophy department at UT. He does have a courtesy (zero-time) appointment here (perhaps we're being courteous to Gawd) but in my ten years here I've seen him only once, when he was lying before the Texas State Board of Education in 2003. There's much more. Read this book.

Worksheet: Dodos related to pigeons, say scientists
Updated 04 March 2002, 12.43
The dodo, the most famous, flightless bird which became extinct in the 17th century is the closest relation to the pigeon. Click here for more birds who can't fly! That's according to UK scientists who have examined DNA from a mummified dodo for the first time, writes the journal Science. No dead-ringer Fact File Know your dodos They were bigger than turkeys
Couldn't fly
Lived on Island of Mauritius, Indian Ocean
Hunted heavily by Dutch settlers
Became extinct in 1681 Before that, it was around for 25m years Dodo appears in chapter three of Alice in Wonderland! And if you've ever seen a picture of a dodo, you'd never think it was a dead-ringer for the familiar pigeon! Scientists took the smallest bits of DNA - the information that gives every living thing its characteristics - from a preserved dodo's skull. When they compared it to different species of pigeons and doves, they discovered it was most similar to the Nicobar pigeon from south east Asia. But the experts won't be doing a Jurassic Park with the dodo. They say it would be impossible to use the DNA to clone it and bring it back to life.

For more information, visit www.hoaxofdodos.com Were Ernst Haeckel’s bogus embryo diagrams ever used in modern textbooks to prove evolution? Not according to filmmaker Randy Olson, who in his film Flock of Dodos portrays biologist Jonathan Wells as a fraud for claiming in the book Icons of Evolution (2000) that modern biology textbooks continued to reprint Haeckel-based drawings. But it turns out that Olson is the one who is promoting a fraud. The diagrams in question were unquestionably used in modern textbooks, and Olson himself knows that fact.

    What is Collapse?
One of the most common themes of this blog is that of cultural collapse - the belief that if we continue on with the status quo and acting as if "the world were made for us to dominate," then one day, probably sooner than we expect, our culture will crumble and all its institutions with it. Ours will not be the first culture or civilization to collapse, nor will it be the last. Countless ways of life have ceased to be, some of which were pushed/forced/shoved in that direction by our civilization itself. But while we have a good idea of what collapse looks like (see the treeless Easter Island
Lear looks at the Crow, a First Nation of the Northern Plains who now reside primarily in Montana, and asks how they dealt with the collapse of their own culture after being forced onto reserves in the late 19 th C. While that is an interesting question, for me what was more enlightening was Lear's description of what their culture's collapse felt like. Now when I say this, I'm not asking whether it felt bad or not - of course it felt bad. It probably felt more bad than any word(s) can describe. One does not watch the passing of their own way of life and not feel something close to absolute sadness. So what do I mean by what collapse "feels" like - um, read on please :)

Dodos back nuclear power and £1200 cars
Sigh. I really do wonder about our collective mentality when I read that not only is Britain going to commit to building more nuclear power stations , but that Indian car manufacturer Tata intends churning out one million £1200 cars a year. Build even more of the same. On the nuclear energy side, there are many valid reasons for not building nuclear power plants—radioactive waste, lack of permanent, safe storage of waste, diversion of funding from renewables, vast consumption of concrete, metals and energy in the construction and deconstruction phases, etc—that will be well put by others. But one thing I will say. The government admits natural gas-generated electricity is becoming ever more marginal due to diminishing domestic supplies, increasing global demand for natural gas, and prices rising on the back of oil price rises. But the reason Britain is over-reliant on gas-fired generating plant is because of the dash for gas in the 1980s, when gas was perceived as being cleaner and cheaper than goal while also removing the power of the coal mining unions. Before that, Britain had relied heavily on coal for electricity generation, with the added benefit that it kept hundreds of thousands of people in work.

San Francisco duo the Dodos will make some headline writer's job easy should they ever break up, but their sound acoustic troubadour meets freak-folk is hardly an extinct species. On "Fools", singer and songwriter Meric Long's percussive strums meet the steady, stick-clacking rumble of Logan Kroeber's metal-weaned drumming. The Dodos have opened for psychedelic folkies Akron/Family, and sure enough, Long's nearly indecipherable vocal yawps on the chorus are more Animal Collective than, um, Plain White T's. Indeed, a lot of the talk about this band so far has centered on their live shows, so it's probably a good idea that the video for "Fools" is essentially a clip of the two performing against a black background. Directed by Matt Amato for We are the Masses , the video shows the Dodos looking red-faced and beginning to glisten with sweat, seemingly fully absorbed in their performance.
