digital signal processing is still a new technology and is rapidly developing. Basically DSP is the representation of a signal by a sequence of numbers.

DSP a crash course. The following is a simple three step example of one possible use of DSP. It is an over simplification to be sure but the basic principles are what we are looking for at this point. 1. A/D Conversion. An input signal is first passed through a low pass filter and then digitized with an analog to digital converter. This is called sampling. Tiny separate samples are taken of the input analog signal and represented at that moment by a digital value. The higher the sampling rate (up to a point) the better we can reconstruct the original signal. However a sampling rate too high complicates our hardware, causes problems and isn't a good design practice. A compromise is always in order. So, what do we do with this digital signal that represents our original analog signal? 2. Signal Processing. 3. D/A conversion. The digital signal is now converted back to an analog signal complete with all the mathematically processed elements. It will not look like the original and that is the whole point we wanted to accomplish. We can use DSP to change a signal based upon our mathematically controlled manipulation.

Introduction
Years ago I worked for a company that made signal processing hardware for telemetry (I was working on a project to implement a data flow parallel processor). I worked with one engineer who would frequently drop references to FFTs and convolutions into conversations. The purpose of these references was to mention something that the listener probably did not understand but, by implication, the engineer who dropped these references did. Whether my colleague actually understood Fourier transforms and digital signal processing is an open question. But it was a successful way to "count coup" on the listener. One reason that my ex-colleague was able to use this technique to "count coup" on his fellow engineers is that most material on Fourier analysis is daunting for those of us with only a basic college calculus background. A lot of it looks like a long series of infinite integrals, theorems and proofs, interspersed with a few narrative paragraphs. Even books on applications of Fourier transforms tend to fall into this category (for example, Chapter 10, The Fourier Transform, in Digital Image Processing by Kenneth Castleman).

In the lab, students design, implement, and test a voiceband modem. A voiceband modem reference design and simulation is available in LabVIEW. Students explore design tradeoffs in signal quality vs. implementation complexity. Students implement transceiver subsystems in C on a Texas Instruments TMS320C6713 floating-point programmable digital signal processor. The C6000 family is used in DSL modems, wireless LAN modems, mobile wireless basestations, and video conferencing systems. Students test their implementations using test equipment, Texas Instruments Code Composer Studio software, and National Instruments LabVIEW software. Lecture not only supports the laboratory material but also covers programmable digital signal processor architectures, analyzes modern A/D and D/A converter architectures, and introduces high-speed broadband wired and wireless communication systems. Forward-error correction (FEC) codes can be used in almost all kinds of communication systems (wireless, wireline, fiber optic network, etc.) to provide significant gains over the overall transmit power budget of the link, and at the same time, lower the bit error rate. In our group, research work on both soft-decision and hard-decision error control codec has been extensively carried out, which includes the recently discovered powerful Convolutional Turbo Codes, Block Turbo Codes, LDPC Codes (a re-discovery), conventional Convolutional Codes and Reed-Solomon Codes.
