DSP and analog signal processing are subfields of signal processing . DSP includes subfields like: audio and speech signal processing , sonar and radar signal processing, sensor array processing, spectral estimation, statistical signal processing, image processing , signal processing for communications, biomedical signal processing, seismic data processing, etc. Since the goal of DSP is usually to measure or filter continuous real-world analog signals, the first step is usually to convert the signal from an analog to a digital form, by using an analog to digital converter . Often, the required output signal is another analog output signal, which requires a digital to analog converter DSP algorithms have traditionally run on specialized processors called digital signal processors (DSPs). Algorithms requiring more performance than DSPs could provide were typically implemented using

W ELCOME TO MY DSP tutorial. DSP stands for Digital Signal Processing - the basis of many areas of technology, from mobile phones to modems and multimedia PCs. DSP devices account for a significant proportion of worldwide semiconductor sales, amounting to billions of dollars annually. DSP is traditionally a highly mathematical subject, and the standard DSP textbooks contain a lot of mathematical exposition. This is necessary for a profound understanding of the subject. However, many people just want a simple introduction to the basic concepts and techniques of DSP. This site aims to provide just that. The site arose from an introductory DSP course I used to teach a few years ago. I am no longer actively involved in DSP, but I have kept the site going because I still receive appreciative messages from people who have found it helpful. I hope that by reading this material, and trying out the Java applets, you will gain a basic appreciation of what DSP is about. If you want to learn more about DSP, try visiting the

With the explosion of digital communications and digital media, the need for methods to process digital data is more important than ever. This book will discuss some of the mathematical concepts behind digital processing, it will then discuss some particular algorithms, and finally it will discuss the actual implementations of these techniques in actual hardware and software systems. Many real-world algorithms are based on the techniques described in this book. JPEG images, MP3 songs, MPEG-2 videos, and ZIP files are all processed using digital processing techniques, and all of them will be discussed, at least conceptually. This book will not teach programming, and will probably not even provide much in the way of actual code, so we don't need to worry about language dependance, except where otherwise noted. For some solid background information on some of the mathematical theory in this book, consider reading Signals and Systems This book is in a very early stage of production, and many of the pages either don't exist or only exist as bare stubs. Help and contributions from all wikibookians will be very much appreciated!

digital signal processing
- Digital signal processing (DSP) refersto various techniques for improving the accuracy and reliabilityof digital communications. The theory behind DSP is quite complex.Basically, DSP works by clarifying, or standardizing, the levels or states of a digital signal. ADSP circuit is able to differentiate between human-made signals, which are orderly, and noise , which is inherentlychaotic. All communications circuits contain some noise. This is true whether the signals are analog or digital, and regardless of the type of information conveyed. Noise is theeternal bane of communications engineers, who are always strivingto find new ways to improve the signal-to-noise ratio in communications systems. Traditional methods of optimizing S/Nratio include increasing the transmitted signal power andincreasing the receiver sensitivity. (In wireless systems, specialized antenna systems can also help.) Digital signalprocessing dramatically improves the sensitivity of a receivingunit. The effect is most noticeable when noise competes with adesired signal. A good DSP circuit can sometimes seem like anelectronic miracle worker. But there are limits to what it cando. If the noise is so strong that all traces of the signal areobliterated, a DSP circuit cannot find any order in the chaos, and no signal will be received.
