New Stem Cell Endowed Chair for MCDB
UC Santa Barbara has received a $3 million gift from William K. Bowes, Jr. to establish an endowed chair in MCDB for the director of the campus's planned Center for Stem Cell Biology and Engineering. The professorship will be named in memory of Bowes's mother, Ruth Garland, a distinguished physician who was one of the first women to graduate from the Stanford School of Medicine, where she later taught. Garland was born in Santa Barbara and raised in Ojai.

Chemicon Fellowship Awarded
Dr. Sherry Hikita, the Director of the UCSB Laboratory for Stem Cell Biology, has been awarded the Chemicon fellowship. Funded through the generosity of Chemicon, a subsidiary of Millipore Inc., the fellowship provides three years of support. As Director, Sherry will oversee renovation of a new CIRM shared stem cell laboratory facility on the third floor of Bio-2 and continue her studies of human embryonic stem cell differentiation.
UCSB Awarded $2.26 M Grant for Stem Cell Lab
Santa Barbara is one of 17 institutions in the state to be awarded a grant by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to construct laboratory facilities for stem cell research. The grant, written by MCDB Chair Dennis Clegg and NRI Associate Director Lincoln Johnson, will be used to support the design and development of a shared laboratory to expand existing stem cell studies and to stimulate new investigations of the biology and engineering of stems cells at UCSB and other nearby research institutions on the central coast. The lab will be located in the Bio-2 building and directed by Dr. Sherry Hikita.

Research Departments People Publications Home ... Departments Cancer Genetics and Developmental Biology Cancer Genetics Cancer Genetics and Developmental Biology Victor Ling - Vice President, Research, BCCA Welcome to the Cancer Genetics and Developmental Biology Home Page. The fundamental concept that cancers progress via accumulation of multiple genetic abnormalities is widely accepted. Loss of genome stability and integrity in the affected cells is a hallmark of the multi-step process of cancer, which progressively leads to uncontrolled cell growth and metastasis. Our Department focuses on identifying genomic changes, and signaling and metabolic pathways associated with tumour progression. Current activities include:
  • Development and application of highly sensitive techniques to identify and track mutations in patient biopsies at the genome-wide level; Identification of novel tumour suppressor genes and oncogenes associated with various cancer; Elucidating the mechanism of signal transduction mediated by the extracellular matrix (ECM) particularly the family of integral plasma membrane receptors called integrin; Investigating the family of energy dependent ATP-binding membrane transport proteins associated with chemotherapy resistance, hormone secretion and programmed cell death.

The Herbert and Esther Bennett Brandwein Award in Genetic Research is announced! Dr. Graveley's paper featured! The arthropod Dscam genes utilize mutually exclusive splicing of large clusters of variable exons to generate tens of thousands of receptors that function in the nervous and immune systems. Work from the Graveley lab now gives insight into regulation of Dscam exon choice. Specifically they have found that the RNA binding protein hrp36 functions to repress inclusion of multiple alternative exons in these events. This work was published in the December 2007 issue of

The CDB Program offers advanced studies leading to the Ph.D. and M.S. degrees: All Ph.D. students are expected to complete a set of core courses during their first year that includes developmental biology, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular genetics, and laboratory rotations. The Ph.D. requirements include completing a series of core/elective courses and laboratory research, passing parts I and II of the qualifying examination, and writing and defending a research dissertation. Programs for the Master's degree require a minimum of 24 course credits, 6 credits of research, and the satisfactory completion and defense of the thesis.
    Financial Aid:
All Ph.D. students are guaranteed a competitive stipend, health coverage, and tuition remission for the duration of their graduate studies, provided that academic standards are met and progress towards a Ph.D. is maintained. All students should apply to the Cell and Developmental Biology Graduate Program - these applications will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee of the consolidated Graduate Programs in Molecular BioSciences. The application deadline is January 5 of each year, but the Admissions Committee begins reviewing applications early in December.
