      Desert Ecology
In ecology, desert ecology is the sum of the interactions between both biotic and abiotic factors of the desert biomes. The biotic factors of desert ecology include the interactions of plant, animal, and bacterial populations in a desert community. Some of the abiotic factors also include latitude and longitude, soil, and climate. Each of these factors have caused adaptations to the particular environment of the region.
Deserts are most notable for their dry climates resulting from rain-blocking mountain ranges and remoteness from oceanic moisture. Deserts occupy one-fifth of the Earth's land surface and occur in two belts: between 15° and 35° latitude in both the southern and northern hemispheres. Read More

Please exercise patience and politeness at all times. If you have a conflict or problem, try to figure it out among yourselves, or approach the Instructor for assistance. Always be careful with the lab equipment - it is very expensive! Additionally, other students are dependent on the same equipment. We cannot afford, financially or time-wise, to have broken equipment. Some equipment used in lab will be assigned to you or your group. For these instruments, make a thorough list of the materials included, and label them with your group name or number. This equipment is your responsibility, and all of it must be returned at the end of the semester. Other equipment will be shared by everyone in the class. Collectively we will be responsible for its well-being and upkeep. Lastly, and most importantly, always clean up after yourselves and tidy up the lab before you leave.

SYLLABUS 2003: BIOLOGY
NATURAL HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST
NOTE: The topics indicated on this syllabus are intended but not necessarily guaranteed. Topics covered in any field course are, by necessity, opportunistic. During the 20 years that this course has been conducted, we have encountered Havard oaks, sand dunes, giant sequoias and at least one snake on every trip. On the other hand, we have observed ring-tailed cats during 7 of the trips, at least one bear five different years (one walked through our campground), Gila monsters in the field on only five trips and either more than 25 snakes or all the desert wildflowers in their most bountiful blossoms only once (each in different years). The fundamental goal of this course is to provide students the opportunity to experience some of the major biomes and communities of the American Southwest. Emphasis will be placed on the physical and floral elements that characterize terrestrial communities, the physical and biotic features of marine intertidal communities, and some general characteristics of a few lentic and lotic (freshwater) systems. Faunal elements are not ignored, but are developed when and if they are encountered. In a typical year, we usually observe or examine a few species of freshwater fishes (and several marine species in the Monterey aquarium), 10-15 species of amphibians, 25-35 species of reptiles, 40-50 species of birds and 20-30 species of mammals.

I believe that the key to both of these foci is understanding the factors that determine species’ regeneration niches, with respect to abiotic factors, biotic feedbacks, and physiological tradeoffs. To this end, I am conducting the following studies: - Mathematical modeling of competitive-facilitative interactions - Assessing soil biotic feedbacks of perennial plants - Experimentally determining the influence of biotic feedbacks, herbivory, and abiotic microsite

Contact US Historic Landmarks Links SUNY Potsdam Desert Ecology I am interested in the influences of temperature on the behavior of desert arthropods. In the high elevation (6,000 feet) deserts near Cedar City, Utah, I conducted two studies which are described further in the publications (2002) part of this website. I was the first to show that ants in the sagebrush areas (like the picture above) orient their several-foot high mounds in order to capture the morning sunlight and heat up their mounds. In a study of a rare species of tiger beetle in the Coral-Pink sand dunes near Zion National Park, a colleague and I discovered that they prefer drier inter-dune areas than another species of tiger beetle. This discovery helped to formulate a state management plan to help the recovery of the rare species.

America's Deserts: Guide to Plants and Animals
by Marianne D. Wallace. "This colorful field guide for all ages illustrates and identifies the plants and animals of North America's four major desert regions: Sonoran, Mojave, Chihuahuan, and Great Basin." A Desert Bestiary: Folklore, Literature, and Ecological Thought from the World's Dry Places
by Gregory McNamee. "Following the model of the medieval Latin bestiaries, Gregory McNamee has written a book at once naturalistic, folkloristic, and literary, made up of short essays on forty-three animals of the world's deserts. These essays discuss the creatures as they are and as they are imagined, and bring their natural lives and histories vividly to the page." Ecology of Desert Systems
by Walter Whitford. "Whitford incorporates a systems perspective to the examination of how arid lands work and proper management guidelines. Chapters cover landforms, geomorphology, and vegetation; characterization of desert climates; wind and water processes; patch-mosaic dynamics; adaptations; primary production; consumption and secondary production; decomposition and nutrient cycling; desertification; and monitoring and assessment."
