Desert Ecology/Dougals Springs/Tanque Verde Trails
Saguaro National Monument East, Tucson By Lisa DeForest azcentral.com Jun. 15, 2006 01:12 PM The Desert Ecology Trail, a few miles from the visitors center, is an easy, quarter-mile loop hike, and wheelchair accessible. It is a self-guiding trail with shaded resting benches and interpretive signs, explaining how plants and animals survive with limited water in the Sonoran Desert. You'll see saguaro, barrel, prickly pear, cholla and ocotillo cactus, and palo verde and mesquite trees. Desert animals that live in the area and are described on the signs include rattlesnakes, desert tortoises, lizards, coyotes and rabbits. Several longer hikes, including THE DOUGLAS SPRINGS TRAIL and the TANQUE VERDE RIDGE TRAIL penetrate the backcountry of the Rincon Mountain Wilderness. Vegetation changes dramatically from the hot, dry saguaro forest at 2,700 feet to the cool, moist pines of Mica Mountain at 8,666 feet. In between are several plant and animal communities. The 6,000 foot vertical elevation change parallels the difference between northern Mexico and southern Canada.

Birds ECOLOGY Introduction Deserts form when weather patterns and/or geographic land forms create an environment where lack of water limits biotic productivity. Water may exist in an unusable form such as ice, or may be absent altogether. Frequently, potential evapotranspiration exceeds annual precipitation. There are four basic types of desert: high pressure, rain shadow, interior continental and coastal. The desert here in southeast Utah, however, defies simple categorization.
The Colorado Plateau
Some consider the Colorado Plateau to be a northern extension of the high-pressure Sonoran desert. Others consider it to be an eastern extension of The Great Basin, a desert in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. High pressure deserts generally form at the middle latitudes (30 degrees) in each hemisphere where warm, dry air masses descend toward the earth's surface. Rain shadow deserts form in localized high pressure zones caused by warm, dry air descending from mountain ranges. The Colorado Plateau is also in the interior of a large continent, far away from significant water sources. Each of these factors contributes to the arid climate of the Colorado Plateau.

Course: SCI 924 Download Syllabus The natural history of Death Valley National Park is explored through reading the text, Death Valley: Geology, Ecology, Archeology , and viewing the video, Ends of the Earth: Death Valley Visiting Death Valley is optional. The flora, fauna, and geological uniqueness of the Death Valley ecosystem are explored by visiting nature centers and walking self-guided nature trails in the park. Teachers have the opportunity to develop integrated lesson plans using the desert ecosystem as a base. While the park is open year round, it is recommended that the field requirements be completed in the fall, winter, or spring because of high summer temperatures.
