Welcome to SUDA,
the Stockholm University Demography Unit*
SUDA is part of the Department of Sociology, offering training in demography through individual courses, multi-disciplinary one- and two-year master’s degrees, and a doctoral degree in sociological demography. These programs are the only comprehensive demographic training in Sweden and are well connected with research schools throughout the world. Our research concentrates on family dynamics – childbearing, partnerships, households – and the cultural, social, economic, and political conditions that underlie them. Most of the work we do is comparative, engaging data from countries throughout Europe and the rest of the world. We are particularly interested in the effects of social policy, gender relationships and attitudes or values on demographic behavior. What is demography?

Sponsored by the Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism (ASEN), in association with the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and British Academy
THE LINK TO THE PAPERS

Demography - chiefly in the form of international migration and differential fertility rates - has enormous socio-political implications and is soaring in importance. Below replacement fertility in developed countries, increased global migration and differential fertility rates between groups within states are altering population balances. In addition, growing state reflexivity and democratisation - censuses, border controls and elections - magnify demographic changes.
On 29 and 30 September, ASEN will host a conference addressing these issues at the London School of Ecnomics. In addition to three renowned scholars in the field, there will be seventeen panels with fifty papers addressing a range of issues involving demography, politics, ethnicity, religion, and nationalism. From migration to differential fertility to ethnic conflict, this conference will be instrumental in exploring how demography relates to politics.

Israel Has Highest Birth Rate in West A report on the status of women in Israel in 2004 presented recently by the Israel Women's Network to the Knesset Committee for the Advancement of the Status of Women indicates that Israeli women have the highest average number of children in the Western world ( The Jerusalem Post
The Israeli average is 2.89 compared to 2.5 in Turkey and 2 in the United States. Of mothers in Israel, some 97,000 are single parents, and 64 percent of them are Jewish. Single mothers head 10 percent of families in Israel compared to 17 percent in other Western countries.

Political Demography in Northern Ireland For technical reasons the site entitled 'Political Demography in Northern Ireland', with the same address as this site, is no longer available.
I am in the process of re-writing the content, to bring it up to date and to make it more relevant, using the 2001 Census results as a baseline from which to work both backwards and forwards. I intend to provide a solid demographic foundation for the analysis of the 2005 (and subsequent) election results, both local and Westminster.
This process may take some time, so I ask you to be patient. If you have visited the site in the past, and would like to access some of the data that you read, then if you send me an e-mail at pdni [at] hotmail.com, I will try to send it to you.

Watch on the West
Four Surprises in Global Demography
By Nicholas Eberstadt Volume 5, Number 5
July 2004 Nicholas Eberstadt is the Henry Wendt Chair in Political Economy at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) in Washington. This piece is based on an article that will appear in the Fall 2004 issue of Orbis
Sustained reductions in family size in the context of peace and social progress-were first witnessed in late eighteenth- century Europe. In the first half of the twentieth century, European countries unveiled another demographic first: non- catastrophic sub-replacement fertility. During the interwar period, a number of European states reported fertility patterns that, if continued, would lead to an eventual stabilization and indefinite population decline thereafter, absent offsetting immigration. These low fertility regimens were entirely voluntary: heretofore, such low birth Rates had virtually always been attended by war, pestilence, famine, or disaster. Europe experienced a baby boom after World War II, but sub-replacement fertility has now returned with a vengeance. Apart from Mongolia, according to the Census Bureau, all of East Asia is sub-replacement, as are Thailand and Burma in Southeast Asia, Kazakstan and Sri Lanka in South-Central Asia, many Caribbean societies, and most South American countries.

To address these issues, CDEHA promotes the study of trends in demography, economics, health, and health care, and the effects of these trends on the well-being of the elderly. The center also encourages cross-disciplinary collaborations and recruits promising trainees and junior faculty to conduct research in this area. Program areas within CDEHA include health disparities; the economics of retirement and demographic change; international population studies; the effects of medical technology on costs, outcomes and well-being of the elderly; and longitudinal and cohort studies of medical care, costs, and health and economic outcomes in the United States and other countries.

Changing Demography
Reconsidering a Misguided Immigration Policy
October 2001 B y Stephen Steinlight Download the .pdf version Preface: Challenging A Crumbling Consensus
Most of all, my conversion is the consequence of my contact over the years with Mark Krikorian, Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies, and the Center's work. We dialogued and formally debated on several occasions, and I moderated public forums in which Mark took part. If dialogue has any meaning, if speakers actually listen to each other rather than close their ears and merely wait impatiently to say their say, then the possibility that one can change as a result of what one hears must be acknowledged. The Socratic method was alive and well in our exchanges, and I did. But, as I've noted, the change came slowly, the process recalling not St. Paul on the road to Damascus but the Latin proverb Stillicidi casus lapidem cavat , "constant dripping hollows out a stone." My thought was also significantly influenced by a superb conference on immigration, "Thy People Shall Be My People: Immigration and Citizenship in America," sponsored by the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation in July of 2000. Perhaps its principal contribution to challenging my point of view was having the opportunity to listen to my own side's thesis articulated by those willing to take it to its extreme, and their reductio ad absurdum made plain the very great dangers within it.

Output from the first stage of the project includes a set of raster data sets of population density and total population figures. For each, a smoothed and an unsmoothed version exists. The smoothed images were produced using Waldo Tobler's pycnophylactic interpolation . These images have a resolution of 5 minutes and are based on source population and boundary data for more than 15,000 administrative units. The project is described in detail in NCGIA Technical Report 95-6 "The Global Demography Project" by Waldo Tobler, Uwe Deichmann, Jon Gottsegen, and Kelly Maloy. The full report including maps and illustrations can be obtained from NCGIA Publications
