It can be a very general science that can be applied to any kind of dynamic population, that is, one that changes over time or space (see population dynamics ). It encompasses the study of the size, structure and distribution of populations, and spatial and/or temporal changes in them in response to birth death migration and aging Human demography is the most well known discipline of demography, and typically what people refer to when using the term demography. Demographic analysis can be applied to whole societies or to groups defined by criteria such as education nationality religion and ethnicity . In academia, demography is often regarded as a branch of either anthropology economics , or sociology Formal demography limits its object of study to the measurement of populations processes, while the more broad field of social demography population studies also analyze the relationships between economic, social, cultural and biological processes influencing a population. The term demographics is often used erroneously for demography, but refers rather to selected population characteristics as used in government

    Abstract:
Most research on earnings inequality has focused on the growing gap between workers of different races and at different education, age, and income levels, but a large portion of the increasing inequality has actually occurred within these groups. This article focuses on the extent and sources of "within-group" wage inequality in more than 500 labor markets in the United States in 1990. In addition to documenting that within-group wage inequality across regions varies more widely today than over the past several decades, the analysis reveals that two frequently cited explanations of rising wage inequality over time have little impact on within-group wage inequality when measured at the local labor market level: (1) industrial shifts and (2) increased technology and trade. By contrast, flexible and insecure employment conditions (e.g., unemployment, contingent work, and immigration) are associated strongly with high local levels of within-group wage inequality, especially among women.

Brief and Straightforward Guide What is demography?
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-demography.htm
What is Demography?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Demography is the scientific study of characteristics and dynamics pertaining to the human population. The characteristics encompassed by this study include size, growth rate, density, vital statistics, and distribution of a specified population. Demography requires the study of specific information that may be gathered from a population census or vital statistic records. People who study and record this information are referred to as demographers. Demographers must know both how to scientifically obtain information and how to interpret it relatively. Demography is widely used for various purposes and can encompass small, targeted populations or mass populations. Governments use demography for political observations, scientists use demography for research purposes, and businesses use demography for the purpose of advertising. In real estate, demography is employed to give clients an overview of specific neighborhoods. Statistical concepts essential to demography include birth and death rate, infant mortality rate, fertility rate, and life expectancy . These concepts can be further broken down into more specific data, such as the ratio of men to women and the life expectancy of each gender. A census helps provide much of this information, in addition to vital statistic records. In some studies, the demography of an area is expanded to include education, income, the structure of the family unit, housing, race or ethnicity, and religion. The information gathered and studied for a demographic overview of a population depends on the party utilizing the information.

The Demography HomePage is part of an initiative to identify, document, and provide simple access to demographic information concerning The United States of America. This part describes CIESIN's data holdings and related information. This HomePage consists of a series of cascading hypertext links providing access to national data resources, on-line supporting documentation (codebooks, data dictionaries, citations), and possibly extraction tools for data access, and you may connect to an anonymous ftp service for data file retrieval. The information contained on this page is organized by major data resource. The source documents will be indexed, allowing for full and/or paragraph text searches. In addition, this page also provides connectivity to many world wide web and gophers sites listed and grouped in four distinct lists. By clicking on the highlighted (or underlined) sites you can connect to those services listed directly. Clicking on this symbol [ ] will reveal the primary information sources for the current viewing page. Finally, at the bottom of this home-page, "buttons" are provided for the users's convenience, for example; button #2 connects directly to CIESIN's Home Page "Information for a Changing World", or try button #1, CIESIN's navigational tool.

Setting An Agenda For Demography Matters in 2008
Looking back over 2007, there is no doubt in my mind that the biggest demographic news story of the year was the strong showing made by live births in the United States. We have already covered this in previous posts ( here , and here) but I have just put up a short guest post from Scott Peterson which you will find below , as a way of emphasising just how important we all feel that this phenomenon is (as is the recent arrival of France back up near the 2.1 replacement rate), and how much we wish others would sit up and take note (and especially in those countries still mired in the 1.2/1.3 Tfr range), and above all to start taking the whole fertility issue more seriously and try to correct what has all too often become an extremely precarious situation.
The second big story of 2007 was undoubtedly the sudden and alarming appearance of high levels of inflation across almost the entire former Soviet Bloc. Claus and I, in numerous posts, both here and elsewhere, have been busy tying this in to the ongoing demographics of these countries - both in terms of fertility and out-migration - and really what happens next here is going to be a very important test of everyone's view. If - in the longer term - fertility really doesn't matter to economic performance, then I see no other underlying impediment to their general economic well-being, but again, if it does, then........
