Domestic dairy policies and international market adjustment in a simplified model of world dairy products trade

Abstract
Two policy experiments are run in which unilateral changes are made in the policy response functions explaining the setting of the domestic intervention prices in the European Community and in the United States. The results suggest that the world price is quite sensitive to changes in domestic policies. The liberalization of dairy policies in the European Community and in the United States would reduce the need for policy intervention in all other countries.

The History of FSHN@UIUC
(Flash animation overview)
Teaching, research and service in dairy technology at the University of Illinois-Urbana campus began in 1896. The original home of dairy technology was the Dairy Husbandry Department, which was housed in Davenport Hall. There was also a creamery there that produced milk, powdered milk and cheese for the campus. Butter scoring in Davenport Hall Creamery, 1909 The manufacture of dairy products was transferred in 1924 to the new Dairy Manufactures Building (DMB) situated at 1302 West Pennsylvania Avenue. This building contained about 16,000 square feet of plant, laboratory and office space on three floors and cost about $252,000 to build (1920 $). The dairy plant in this building provided an excellent opportunity for students to get hands-on experience of a commercial dairy operation during their studies. Professor Ross was instrumental in securing funding for the Teagasc Biotechnology Centre for research on food and health and animal biotechnology. He is the inventor on 11 patents and has licensed a number of technologies to Irish industries including the use of lacticin antimicrobial peptides for food uses. He serves on a number of boards and committees including the executive management group of the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, the Glanbia Scientific Advisory Committee, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland and the European Food Safety Authority on genetically modified microorganisms. He also acts as an adjunct professor of University College Cork where he lectures on food biotechnology. The William C. Haines Dairy Science Award, established in 2004, recognises individuals who, through their accomplishments in research and development in the field of chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, technology, nutrition, and/or engineering, have made a significant contribution to dairy science and the betterment of the dairy industry and consumers of dairy products. The award, named for William C. Haines, former vice president of Product Innovation for Dairy Management Inc., includes an engraved plaque, $1,000 in cash and travel expenses to an annual dairy industry event co-sponsored by the CDRF. A committee of dairy personnel representing producers, processors, manufacturers and researchers make the final award selection.

Retail Dairy Display Lighting
Several studies demonstrate the "light oxidized effect" on milk due to the use of fluorescent lighting in food displays. Milk loses not only flavour in this process, but also experiences nutrient losses including the degradation of riboflavin and vitamins A and D. This information is well understood
by the dairy industry but less so by retailers. "...trained panelists were able to detect oxidized flavor after 15 to 30 minutes of light exposure while consumers required between 54 minutes and 2 hours."

Flavor and Odor Defects in Milk (and Other Dairy Products) . Food Science Department, Cornell University. "Oxidized Light-Induced: Odor, taste of burnt-protein, burnt-feathers, or medicinal or plastic-like taste. May progress to metallic-oxidized type flavor due to fat oxidation." "Cause - exposure of milk to sunlight or fluorescent lights resulting in protein degradation and/or lipid oxidation. Milk in unprotected or transparent milk jugs/bottles is more susceptible though this defect may occur in paper packaging if the light is intense and exposure time is sufficient."

Developing a Biosecurity Plan to Prevent Introduction of Mastitis Pathogens
Article Summary:
  • Biosecurity addresses prevention of introduction of pathogens and prevention of spread of pathogens Highest risk of introduction is from addition of heifers or cows Certain practices can help reduce the risk of introduction of pathogens
A biosecurity plan has two aspects; the prevention of introduction of contagious pathogens to the dairy and the prevention of spread of either contagious or environmental pathogens on the premises.
  • Culture the individual animal upon arrival to the dairy; just remember that contagious pathogens are sporadic shedders Isolate purchased animals to prevent spread until you are totally assured that the incoming animals are uninfected Maintain a regular surveillance of the bulk tank, individual clinical cases, and the subclinical population of cows for contagious pathogens by culturing in order to continue monitoring for these three If animals have contact with animals from other herds at public exhibitions or commingled raising and then returning them to your own herd treat them as purchased animals Develop a plan for visitors to your dairy that addresses their outer ware and past exposure to livestock
