Expertise among populations in the United States is particularly strong. Many recipients of advanced degrees have gone on to careers in applied research and nonacademic practice. Four faculty members are interested in symbolic processes that endow the world and human existence with cultural meaning. Their research focuses on problems of method and theory, religion, art and other material aspects of culture, and language in culture. Graduate students in sociocultural anthropology are introduced to the specializations and approaches represented by the faculty. They take course work in at least one geographical area and electives in areas of interest. Both the M.A. and the Ph.D. programs are tailored to the needs of individual students and stress intensive one-on-one discussions between students and their advisers.

In Encyclopedia of Cultural Anthropolog y, David Levinson and Melvin Ember, editors. New York: Henry Holt and Company, vol. 4:1345-1351. VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY Visual anthropology logically proceeds from the belief that culture is manifested through visible symbols embedded in gestures, ceremonies, rituals, and artifacts situated in constructed and natural environments. Culture is conceived of as manifesting itself in scripts with plots involving actors and actresses with lines, costumes, props, and settings. The cultural self is the sum of the scenarios in which one participates. If one can see culture, then researchers should be able to employ audiovisual technologies to record it as data amenable to analysis and presentation. Although the origins of visual anthropology are to be found historically in positivist assumptions that an objective reality is observable, most contemporary culture theorists emphasize the socially constructed nature of cultural reality and the tentative nature of our understanding of any culture. There is an obvious relationship between the supposition that culture is objectively observable and the popular belief in the neutrality, transparency, and objectivity of audiovisual technologies. From a positivist perspective, reality can be captured on film without the limitations of human consciousness Pictures provide an unimpeachable witness and: source of highly reliable data. Given those assumptions, it is logical that as soon as the technologies were available, anthropologists attempted to produce wit] the camera the sort of objective research data the could tee stored in archives and made available for stud by future generations (Edwards 1992).

A key concept in Cultural Anthropology is Culture . Every organization (i.e. society) has a distinctive "Culture"; each has an unique cognitive structure (e.g. thoughts, world view), rules of moral conduct (e.g. norms, ethos) and patterns of social interactions (e.g. social structure, family). Cultures are often expressed via the medium of symbols (e.g. narratives, dreams, myth, ritual and icons). The field of anthropology that researches symbols is called Symbolic Anthropology NEW

Narrative Life History
Cultural Anthropology is a method of studying global cultures via participant observation and cross-cultural comparison (e.g. Japan and United States). An anthropologist researches global cultures by fieldwork which is accomplished by immersion into a society's socio-cultural environment. It is study by "doing" (participating) and "analyzing" (observation). An anthropologist often asks questions such as: How are we different and how are we similar? However, the philosophy is to go beyond ethnocentrism, the judgmental idea that one culture is superior than others. When each society's cognitive structure, rules of moral conduct and patterns of social interactions are placed in its own socio-cultural context, these become meaningful despite how "bizarre" or "strange" they seem to other cultures looking in. Unlike ethnocentrism, the concept of cultural relativism emphasizes that there are no superior or inferior cultures; all cultures are meaningful when placed in their own socio-cultural context.

Hanover offers a cultural anthropology major. Anthropology may be divided into the sub-fields of cultural anthropology, linguistics, archaeology, physical or biological anthropology, and applied anthropology. The scope of the sub-fields will be explored in the Introduction to Anthropology class. While upper level courses focus on cultural anthropology, the faculty is committed to supporting students in pursuing their interest in any sub-field through independent or directed study courses. The department is committed to providing the highest quality education possible. The professors attempt to be supportive and nurturing, including being highly accessible to students, but we are also committed to challenging students and pushing them to reach their full potential. Our commitment to quality education is manifest in several ways. First, our faculty is highly trained in a wide range of specialties and has global experience that covers many regions of the world. The faculty members are also active in regional and national professional societies, presenting research and serving as officers and consultants.

Anthropology
"I had been looking for a society reduced to its simplest expression. The society of the Nambikwara had been reduced to the point at which I found nothing but human beings." Why Anthropology? Anthropology examines human adaptation, variation, and change. From a holistic perspective anthropologists study human adaptability in the past, present, and future by analyzing culture, society, language, and biology. There are five main sub-disciplines in anthropology. Cultural anthropologists conduct participant-observation fieldwork in communities throughout the world. Archeologists investigate material cultural remains to better understand human behavior. Linguistic anthropologists examine how speech and language is used to communicate ideas about our environment and how language and speech changes over time and across geographical areas. Biological anthropologists research questions pertaining to human evolution, forensics, genetics, human growth and development, and demographics. Applied anthropology is conducted in all of these four sub-fields. Today many anthropologists work in applied fields that use anthropological methods and theories to identify and solve contemporary social problems.
