About the Unit Cell
Crystals are three dimensional ordered structures than can be described as a repetition of identical unit cells. The unit cell is made up of the smallest possible volume that when repeated, is representative of the entire crystal. The dimensions of a unit cell can be described with 3 edge lengths (a,b,c) and 3 angles (alpha, beta, gamma). The 3D location of atoms within a unit cell can be listed as their x, y, z Cartesian Coordinates. Space groups describe the symmetry of a unit cell, of which there are 230 variations. In the molecular origami program, by clicking on Use Crystallographic Info NOW , you can experiment with all the different types of space groups.
Why are X-rays used ?
Using visible light, it will never be possible to see atoms under even the most powerful of microscopes. In order for an object to be seen, its size needs to be at least half the wavelength of the light being used to see it. Since visible light has a wavelength much longer that the distance between atoms it is useless to see molecules. In order to see molecules it is necessary to use a form of electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength on the order of bond lengths, such as X-rays.

ABOUT THE WCPCW
The West Coast Protein Crystallography Workshop (WCPCW), a bi-annual event, has grown in prominence and attendance since its inception about 30 years ago. It has become a pre-eminent venue for the presentation of useful structure information and developing techniques in the field of macromolecular crystallography. The 350+ conferees include graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, senior faculty, and delegates from West Coast laboratories. Increasingly, crystallographers from other regions, both domestic and foreign, have participated as well. This Conference preserves its workshop character allowing for the productive interaction of all the participants. A notable feature of the WCPCW is a schedule dominated with oral presentations by students, postdocs, and those who have been closely allied with the execution of the research presented. This allows for an impressive array of talks on exciting topics by rising stars. We anticipate an exciting schedule featuring outstanding science coupled with a unique collaborating opportunity for all members of the crystallographer community.

Protein Crystallography Course for Postdocs and PhD students (2006) The course is designed for postdocs and graduate students who are currently engaged in crystallographic projects but who may not have had any formal training in the theory and practice of macromolecular crystallography. It is now also offered as part of the MRes in Structural Biology which is run by the Imperial College Centre for Structural Biology. Students on the MRes in Biochemical Research who have a strong interest in crystallography are also welcome to attend. There will be a total of twelve 2 hour lectures which will be given at 10:15 am in Huxley 747 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. A timetable (with downloadable handouts) is available. Staff Area Macromolecular Crystallography is a technique used to study biological molecules such as proteins, viruses and nucleic acids (RNA and DNA) to a resolution higher than ~5 Å. This high resolution helps elucidate the detailed mechanism by which these macromolecules carry out their functions in living cells and organisms. Protein molecules can crystallize under regulated conditions; the crystals are made up of multiple copies of the molecule arranged in a regular 3-dimensional lattice. The x-rays deflected ("scattered") by the atoms in equivalent positions in the crystal lattice concentrate into sharp intense spots ( crystal diffraction pattern ). The macromolecular structure can be determined by analysis of the intensities and positions of the diffraction spots. The Macromolecular Crystallography Group at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory operates and develops beamlines providing state of the art macromolecular crystallography facilities and support for visiting researchers. Of the five beamlines currently operational, two (BL9-2 and BL1-5) are designed for MAD experiments, two side stations (BL9-1 and BL11-1) are also MAD capable at slightly reduced energy resolution and one (BL11-3) operates at a fixed energy above the Se K edge. BL7-1 is available to users in monochromatic mode; energy tunability will be implemented in the Spring of 2007. Information about a crystal can be obtained by bombarding it with electromagnetic radiation or subatomic particles. Crystallographic techniques have been used for many years and have have revealed the structures of important molecules like DNA.     This software uses interactive computer graphics to introduce basic concepts of X-ray diffraction by crystals, including the reciprocal lattice, the Ewald sphere construction, Laue cones, the wavelength dependence of the reciprocal lattice, primitive and centered lattices and systematic extinctions, rotation photography, Laue photography, space group determination and Laue group symmetry, and the alignment of crystals by examination of reciprocal space.
    XRayView is designed with "user-friendliness" in mind, using Motif style, pull-down menus to control the program. Many of the experiences of using real X-ray diffraction equipment to examine crystalline diffraction can be simulated. Exercises are available on-line to guide the users through typical X-ray diffraction experiments.

Welcome
The International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) was founded in 1948 to promote international cooperation in crystallography and the first General Assembly and Congress was held in Cambridge, USA. The Union has additional objects to contribute to advancement of crystallography in all its aspects including related topics concerning the non-crystalline states; to facilitate international standardization of methods, of nomenclature, and of symbols used in crystallography; and to form a focus for the relations of crystallography to other sciences. Since then, the Union showed its activities in three fields. The first one is the organization of General Assembly and Congress every three years. The second one is the publication of eight crystallographic journals and many books in crystallography. The third one is the activities given by 17 scientific commissions. The year 2008 is the 60th Anniversary. The number of the membership countries and Adhering bodies increased from 4 to 40. The crystallography became the basis of all the sciences studying inorganic, organic and biological substances. The 21st General Assembly and Congress will be held in Osaka, Japan, 23 - 31 August. We have a chance to see the full breadth of current crystallography and glimpse of what is to come.
