That's easy. Say you want to turn lead into gold well, who's stopping you? Knock yourself out. But perhaps years of lonely, fruitless research are not enough maybe you also want to be taken seriously. That's different. For that, you need a good name. Lead into gold? That would be the ancient and very august-sounding science of alchemy. Personality typing through analysis of head-bumps? Not quackery, my ignorant friend phrenology. Now comes perhaps the cleverest tag of all: cryptozoology. It refers to the search for new animals, animals dwelling in unexpected places, and most importantly for "X-Files" scriptwriters, "cryptids" legendary creatures such as the yeti. As Loren Coleman and Jerome Clark argue in their new book, "Cryptozoology A to Z," there are, obviously, undiscovered creatures on this planet. Surely the search for them is a legitimate scientific pursuit?

Much bigfoot evidence turns out to be fake A forensic expert in the US believes he has some of the strongest evidence yet that the Bigfoot, or sasquatch, creature exists. The creatures are real enough to those who say they have spotted them - but most scientists remain sceptical about their existence. Investigator Jimmy Chilcutt of the Conroe Police Department in Texas, who specialises in finger and footprints, has said he believes he is certain around six footprints found - claimed to have been made by Bigfoot - are genuine. He added that one 42 cm (18-inch) print found in Washington in 1987 has convinced him. "The unique thing about this cast is that it has dermal ridges - and the flow and texture matches the ridge flow texture of one from California," Mr Chilcutt told BBC World Service's Discovery programme.

What is cryptozoology?
Cryptozoology is the science of monsters. The Florida Skunk Ape and Chessie, the sea serpent in the Chesapeake Bay, are just two of the unknown monsters cryptozoologists study.
The problem with cryptozoology is that most “legitimate” scientists don’t take it very seriously. And the public’s concept of a cryptozoologist is a half-crazed, wild-eyed dreamer chasing the impossible. Creatures like Bigfoot, the Florida Skunk Ape, the Loch Ness Monster, and other bizarre creatures are certainly lively grist for the tabloid mill. Hardly a week goes by without a front page story emblazed across a supermarket tabloid announcing that so-and-so was kidnapped by a Sasquatch and was privileged to witness first hand the family life of these elusive creatures. And therein lies the rub. Like UFO abductions, encounters with unknown beasts are usually taken with a grain of salt reports from ‘The Twilight Zone”. Cryptozoologists, however, are deadly serious about their monsters. The possibility that such creatures may exist no matter how fantastic they may be fires their inquiring natures. Cryptozoology is the study of “hidden animals”. New species of life are found nearly every day by scientists, but cryptozoology focuses on large varieties like sea serpents and ape-like bipeds. The problem for the cryptozoologist is, other than general skepticism by the general public, is that details of many of these creatures are shrouded in folklore. Take for example the Florida Spunk Ape, an obvious cousin of Bigfoot.

Cryptozoology. Another Chupacabra Killed Time to stop shooting these things. I'm offering a reward to anyone who captures one alive. "This weekend, two brothers were out hunting squirrels when they were surprised by a very similar animal. The brothers shot it and killed it. It has leathery skin, long teeth, and hind legs longer than its front legs. One of the brothers, Kolby Russell, said this isn't his first run in with the creature. "I had chased it a couple times earlier, about a month ago, and my friends didn't believe me, I finally showed them and they did." - kltv Cryptozoology.
