The idea of suspended animation has been around for decades and has been a mainstay of science fiction. One version of it, called cryonics, is seen by many as a means of literally cheating death, preserving a human body at the point of death and then, in some future time, reviving it when whatever killed it can be cured. People die of diseases and other conditions that sometime in the future might be easily curable. For most people that fact is of little comfort, as, say, cancer ravages their bodies and robs them of life. All there is to do is to make ones death as comfortable and as dignified as possible. Afterwards, ones relatives and loved ones will mourn. But for some people, unwilling to go quietly into that good night no matter what the state of medical science is, there may be an option, albeit a controversial one. That option is to place ones body into a kind of suspended animation, right at the point of clinical death, in the hopes of being revived at some point when medical science can cure whatever condition has killed one. The option in question is called cryonics. The theory behind cryonics stem from cases of people who have fallen into an icy lake and have been submerged for up to an hour in the frigid water before being rescued. The people who managed to survive did so because the icy water put their body into a sort of suspended animation, slowing down their metabolism and brain function to the point where they needed almost no oxygen. Cryonics is a little different than that, however.

Why Cryonics?
Human beings are all the same kind of animal and much like many other animals. We exist along with an estimated 5 to 50 million other species which all evolved with survival and reproductive instincts that helped us to avoid danger and threats, and thus to perpetuate ourselves. We human animals are mainly social beings and most of us experience loss when others die, as well as fears of separation or loneliness. Such feelings can be observed in other animals, like elephants, dogs and primates. But unlike these animals and all of the world's other living things, we are the only living creature that knows that it will personally die. What we are not entirely clear about is what death is. Indeed, our recorded history is bloodied with the disagreements between religions and cultures which hold very different views about what life and death mean. Even today no-one agrees, and so the mystifications about life and death remain and explanations are wanting. However, we do have scientific agreement on how to observe and measure biology in its life and decay, from the minute cellular levels of existence to the total biological system of a healthy body and a dying then dead body. It is true that we do not entirely understand human biology, but we have accepted medical definitions of life and death and we act on them accordingly. However, the accepted definition of death has a

Cryonics Evidence for this comes from many sources. Invertebrates (e.g. insects) have been completely frozen and revived.
Many healthy children walking around today, were also once frozen embryos.
Several mammalian organs, e.g. dogs kidneys, have been fully functional after complete freezing.
Most kinds of human tissue have been successfully frozen and revived. " Cryonic suspension is a bridge to the future " It should be remembered that it is not our job to freeze, but to cool down. We undertake upon death to be with you as soon as possible, gently using packed ice to cool the deceased down. We will then apply a medical procedure known as Perfusion (a form of transfusion) perfected by injection and then pack the deceased in ice in a specially designed container for shipment as quickly as possible to Detroit, using the same documentation as we would when shipping any human remains. Please remember this can only be done after Legal Death has been recorded and from receipt of Coroners clearance.

Cryonics Why Fund Your Suspension with Life Insurance?
by Rudi Hoffman, CFP
This question in some form comes up often in discussions with people with an interest in cryopreservation. The good news is that there are answers that are mathematically valid, (i.e. not merely opinions) and that make sense to most people.
The purpose of this article is to answer this question in a clear, concise, understandable manner. Additionally, we will see that there is an empirical way of determining the optimum funding that will appeal to most rationally minded cryonicists.
Here is the key question. Is is better for Jack to spend his 80 dollars per month in a mutual fund, or a life insurance policy, to fund his suspension?
There are other issues. If Jack is not insurable due to health reasons, he will not be able to obtain life insurance to fund his suspension, and he would be forced to fund his suspension from his estate.
Most people become uninsurable at some point in their lives. It therefore makes sense to find out how affordable it can be to fund your suspension with the incredible financial leverage that only life insurance provides. It the case of cryonicists, the policy can truly become LIFE insurance not DEATH insurance.
Cryonicists tend to be life extenionists who take great care of themselves and thereby can usually qualify for the best possible insurance rates. (I spend a good deal of time explaining this information to insurance companies!)

About KrioRus
KrioRus specialist Alexey Potapov KrioRus is the first cryonics company outside the United States and is providing affordable cryonics services. It was established in 2006 by a group of Russian cryonics enthusiasts who found during a cryosuspension in September 2005 that there are few hurdles to a successful cryonics practice in Russia. The legal issues, the technical issues, the transportation and the co-operation with morticians were all much easier than we expected when we first considered a local cryofirm. Russian cryonicists wanted to create a local company for more than a decade. Preparatory work on KrioRus started in 2005. We selected the location for the storage in January 2006. In March we moved the equipment in and tested the dewar. On April 24 and 28 we moved two Russian patients who have been temporarily stored in dry ice into permanent storage. On May 3, 2006 "KrioRus" was registered as a limited liability company. The company focus is in providing reliable and affordable cryonics services throughout Russia and in Europe. We can minimize the price of cryonics by doing neurosuspension (which is expensive at Alcor and not offered by Cryonics Institute). Our procedures are simple and functional ensuring that the total price stays below 10000 euros in most situations. We are authorised by a Russian insurance company to sell life insurance as their agent (with a discount to the client), bringing cryonics within the reach of everyone. We can also perform a whole-body suspension and store the patient in Russia or ship him to an American cryonics provider.

Freezing Assets: Human Corpsicles Could Wake Up Rich
By Bill Christensen posted: 27 January 2006 01:24 pm ET Share this story Dynasty trusts, also called personal revival trusts, are a hot topic among the cold dead. More than 20 states allow trusts that pay out funds indefinitely to future generations. Now, cryonics clients can name themselves as beneficiaries before being frozen. Who wants to be a corpsicle? Mostly those who are single, male and wealthy. Kenneth Weiss, co-founder of RSA Security is working with a Swiss bank. Robert Miller, owner of Future Electronics, Inc. is also planning for this frozen future. Science fiction writers have been chipping away at prejudices about frozen and preserved people for generations. The word "corpsicle" was probably coined by science fiction Grand Master Frederik Pohl in the mid-1960's. Larry Niven used it in stories like A World Out of Time "Your newspapers called you people corpsicles," said the blond man. "I never understood what the tapes meant by that." "It comes from Popsicle. Frozen sherbet." Corbell had used the word himself before he became one of them. One of the corpsicles, the frozen dead.
