Cryopreservation of Vaucheria sessilis performed using a Linkam BCS196 cryo microscope stage by Dr. Roland Fleck at the institute of freshwater ecology.
http://www.linkam.co.uk/cryobiology_gallery.html
Vaucheria sessilis (Vaucher) De Candolle ex Collins CCAP 745/1C Dr. Roland Fleck, Institute of Freshwater Ecology Vaucheria is a widely dispersed organism, inhabiting freshwater, brackish and marine environments, filaments can be amphibious, living on mud that is periodically immersed in water then exposed to the air. Vaucheria is a member of the xanthophyceae and contains diadinoxanthin its major xanthophyll and lacks chlorophyll b (Whittle and Casselton, 1975)
The alga V. sessilis forms branching, tubular coenocytic axes of an even thickness throughout (50-200um), the axes contain numerous discoid green chloroplasts and many nuclei. Filaments demonstrate apical growth and has conspicuous reproductive structures, with oogonia and antheridia being conspicuous on filaments. Download Product Data for Cryobiology System (PDF)

52. Father Basile Luyet - Father Of Cryobiology
Father Luyet has been hailed in the scientific world as the “Father of cryobiology,” a title which drew a big smile and a lengthy explanation, both of which
http://www.planetesacha.com/Cryobiology.html
Cryobiology Explained by Noted Priest-Scientist By Marie Mulvenna With current interest often expressed about the possibility of freezing and later returning to life, the topic of cryobiology rates high on the list of popular topics for discussion. But discussion is something Father Luyet leaves to the speculators and conversationalists. For the past 17 years, Father Luyet has called Madison, Wisconsin, his home where he has worked endlessly in a research lab and with the assist of a grant to underwrite his studies. He built and fostered a productive non-profit group called The American Foundation for Biological Research, devoted to biophysical studies on freezing and freezing-related phenomena. To encourage more directly health-related applications, he developed a second laboratory in Rockville, Maryland, in 1966. Ordained in 1921, Father Luyet continued his studies for eight years at the University of Geneva, receiving two doctorates, one in biology and one in physics. In 1929 he received a grant from Yale University for graduate studies and arrived in America which was later to become his home. Father Luyet then proceeded to postdoctoral research at the Rockefeller Institute in New York where he became acquainted with Dr. Alexis Carell, the first of the Nobel prize winners in the field of tissue study and culture.

In the post-genomic era the mouse has become a key model organism for the functional analysis of the mammalian genome. Within the large scale ENU-mutagenesis screen numerous new mutant lines are produced, leading to the identification of new genes and to valuable insight into gene function. However, the steadily increasing number of mutants, and by inference the increasing demand of animal space may exceed the available resources. To accomplish this the cryobiology unit of the IEG was established in 1997. Though mainly focusing on sperm freezing embryo freezing is routinely performed as well. Other complementary reproductive techniques like in vitro fertilisation and embryo transfer, the cryopreservation of germplasm provides a secure and economical way of storing the enormous number of new mutations generated enabling their future use for research. To ensure consistent quality, spermatozoa and embryos are frozen and rederived according to

Genome Resource Banking of Laboratory Animal Models

Robert J. Russell, D.V.M., is Director of Laboratory Animal Medicine at Harlan Sprague Dawley, Inc., Indianapolis, Indiana. "There can be no doubt that above all we, as a society and unified scientific community, must first understand the crucial need for genetic resource conservation. Given that, then the natural question becomes where do we go from here? The answer is to first identify needs and then logical priorities and strategies followed by implementation. . . . There is a fundamental need to know what is out there, its character, its usefullness, and how to protect it" (Wildt 1997, pp. 429-431).
In this regard, the laboratory animal research community can learn much from previous efforts by several gropus to develop the concept, policies, and infrastructures associated with genome resource banks (GRBs
