Crusty crustacean - In Sum - discovery of Crustacea fossils - Brief Article
Natural History March, 2002 by Kirsten L. Weir CRUSTY CRUSTACEAN Crustaceans are a large and Varied crew, with some 39,000 species living today and many more known from their fossil remains. The oldest fossil crustaceans date back to the Late Cambrian Epoch, between 512 and 505 million years ago. Now a team of paleontologists has found a fossilized arthropod they're betting is an early member of the subphylum Crustacea. If they're right, that would make it the oldest known crustacean, dating back 540-520 million years, to the Early Cambrian.

Darwin's Crustacea http://www.oum.ox.ac.uk/onlinedb/darwin/darintro.htm Posted: July 11, 2005 When Charles Darwin returned from his voyage as naturalist aboard the Beagle , he entrusted his collected specimens to various scientists for study. The crustacea went to Thomas Bell, who in 1862 sent them to J. O. Westwood, Oxford's first Hope Professor of Zoology. Each record contains the specimen's image and scientific name, and the corresponding entry from Darwin's diary ("June 1833 Maldonado; Crab, caught in dry hole in one of the low islands of the R.Parana, above Rosario"). Users can search on any of these fields—for the species Dilocarcinus (Dilocarcinus) pagei cristatus , for example, or simply for the word crab or the year . They make a fascinating field for browsing, and a compelling portrait of the great naturalist's thoughts and methods.

Terrestrial Amphipods or "Lawn Shrimp," (Crustacea: Amphipoda)
Thomas R. Fasulo
Introduction
Amphipods comprise an order of crustacea, shrimp-like in form, which contains mostly marine and freshwater forms. While some species are terrestrial, they still require moist habitats. These terrestrial species are sometimes referred to as "lawn shrimp" due to their similarity to true shrimp. Amphipods were first described in New South Wales, Australia, and then later on several Pacific islands. They were first reported in the Western Hemisphere in 1918 when at least one species was found in California (Mallis 1990). About 90 species occur in the United States and Canada. Nationally, the best known terrestrial species that occasionally invades structures is Talitrus sylvaticus (Haswell) (Smith and Whitman 1992). Two species common to Florida are Talitrus specificus and Talitroides allaudi (Hodge 1999).
