The Insecta (insects) are a Class of the large animal Phylum called ARTHROPODA (arthropods) - a name that refers to the jointed limbs. The other major Classes of living arthropods (i.e. animals related to insects) include the Crustacea (crabs, lobsters, shrimps, barnacles, woodlice, etc.), the

Introduced Species The Arthropods are the largest phylum of free living animals, including millions of species. The Subphylum Crustacea are a large group of mainly marine species. They differ from other arthropods by having two pairs of antennae in front of the mouth. About 40 000 species have been named, however this represents only a small proportion of the total (likely to be more than 100 000 species). The body has a basic plan, being subdivided into head, thorax and abdomen. Quite often, some of the thoracic segments are fused to the head, forming the carapace. Most crustacean groups have a planktonic larval stage that differs greatly in appearance to the adult. The most common larval form is a nauplius, a rounded animal with three pairs of appendages, including large antennae. Crustaceans occur in virtually all marine and most freshwater environments. They range in size from copepods (usually less than 1 mm) to crabs with a maximum leg span of more than 2 m. CRUSTACEANS AT THE MDC The following Crustaceans live at the Marine Discovery Centre:

Crustaceans The largest group of marine arthropods are the crustaceans. Some of the crustaceans include a large range of shrimps, water fleas, barnacles , copepods, fish lice, ostracods, sandfleas, beach hoppers, isopods , amphipods, pill bugs, slaters , a range of prawns and shrimp, freshwater yabbies, rock lobsters, hermit crabs, half crabs, spider crabs, swimming crabs, normal crabs and shore crabs. These prawn, lobster and crab-like crustaceans form a class called Malocostraca .Some researchers consider that the group Crustacea is so important that it should have its own phylum, called Crustacea The name Crustacea comes from their hard "crusty" outer shell. Crustaceans vary so much in shape, form and behaviour that it is a difficult task to create a definition which lists traits that are common to all of them. This is especially so with the barnacles, which look like no other crustacean in the adult stage. It is the juvenile, planktonic stage which tells that it is a crustacean. All crustaceans have

    WATER FLEAS
by Jan Parmentier and Wim van Egmond Bosmina longirostris Water fleas belong to the Crustacea, a large group of 'jointed limbed' animals, most of which live in water. Water fleas are placed in the order Cladocera and are probably called 'fleas' because they move through the water by a sort of hopping. Water fleas are very common in fresh water, in Britain you can find about 80 different species, in The Netherlands about a 100 species. Many of them are rare. For most people, water fleas are all similar, but when we look more closely, big differences will be found in morphology and in habits. Acroperus harpae The chief characteristic of the water fleas is that the main part of the body is enclosed in a kind of shell, with the appearance of two lids, but made of one piece. They are interesting animals for the microscopist. Because you can see through them, you can study for instance the beating of the heart and follow the course of the blood cells round part of the body. Their sizes differ from several hundred microns to more than five millimetre for the larger species.

    From LoveToKnow 1911
CRUSTACEA, a very large division of the animal kingdom, comprising the familiar crabs, lobsters, crayfish , shrimps and prawns, the sandhoppers and woodlice, the strangely modified barnacles and the minute water-fleas. Besides these the group also includes a multitude of related forms which, from their aquatic habits and generally inconspicuous size, and from the fact that they are commonly neither edible nor noxious, are little known except to naturalists and are undistinguished by any popular names. Collectively, they are ranked as one of the classes forming the sub-phylum Arthropoda , and their distinguishing characters are discussed under that heading. It will be sufficient here to define them as Arthropoda for the most part of aquatic habits, having typically two pairs of antenniform appendages in front of the mouth and at least three pairs of post-oral limbs acting as jaws. As a matter of fact, however, the range of structural variation within the group is so wide, and the modifications due to parasitism and other causes are so profound, that it is almost impossible to frame a definition which shall be applicable to all the members of the class. In certain parasites, for instance, the adults have lost every trace not only of Crustacean but even of Arthropodous structure, and the only

      [American Heritage Dictionary]
A crustacean is an arthropod with 5 pairs of appendages on 6 segments: 2 pairs of antennae, a pair of jaws, or mandibles, 1 on each side of the mouth, and 2 pairs of manipulatory mouthparts. The number of segments in the body varies, depending on the group. In some forms the body may simply be a trunk. In more advanced types it may be devided into a thorax and abdomen. The thorax has maximum of 8 segments, and the abdomen, 6. ... Reproduction is almost entirely sexual, fertilization is usually internal, and the eggs are attached to the body of the female. Introduction
This page introduces the crown group Crustacea, sometimes defined as the last common ancestor of all living crustaceans and all of its descendants. This is, of course, a circular definition. We normally try to give a somewhat more explicit definition of a clade, but that's admittedly difficult for the Crustacea. Nothing remotely resembling a consensus phylogeny of the main crustacean groups has emerged from 250 years of carcinology . In fact, we even lack agreement on what the "main crustacean groups" might be. For example, a respectable minority holds that Crustacea itself is paraphyletic and includes the insects See, e.g.
