It gives managers insights into introducing innovation within their organizations and accelerating the development of creative performance in their staff. The journal's central consideration is how to challenge and facilitate creative potential, and how then to imbed this into result orientated innovative business development.

creativity and unpredictability
Margaret Boden
Devotees of the humanities expect to be surprised. An arresting metaphor or poetic image, an unpredicted twist of the plot, a novel style of music, painting, or dance...all these unexpected things amaze and delight us. Scientists, too, appreciate the shock of a new ideathe double helix, the jumping gene, or the benzene-ring. Indeed, unpredictability is often said to be the essence of creativity. But unpredictability is not enough. At the heart of creativity lie constraints: the very opposite of unpredictability. Constraints and unpredictability, familiarity and surprise, are somehow combined in original thinking. An adequate account of creativity should clarify the "how" in that "somehow." It must show how creativity is grounded in constraints, and why it is that creative ideas are unpredictableand often inexplicable even after they have occurred. In the next section, I show why it is that constraints are crucial to creativity. Then, in Section III, I discuss a scientific approach to creativity that uses concepts drawn from artificial intelligence to help us understand the human mind. Finally, I offer various reasons why creative ideas will always remain surprising, why unpredictability is inescapable.

          Abstract
What will emerge from using the Internet as a research tool? The answer, Vernor Vinge argues, will be limited only by our imaginations. We humans have built a creativity machine. It's the sum of three things: a few hundred million computers, a communication system connecting those computers, and some millions of human beings using those computers and communications. The Power of Pointless Creativity
"Nonsense and beauty have close connections."
- EM Forester Have you noticed that a lot of people who write about creativity also try to justify it with practical uses like problem solving or making money? As if creativity were the intended end product of a controllable series of actions. In fact, there are misguided "rules" for creative meetings in offices to keep them on track. Arts programs are discontinued in schools all the time as a waste of time that won't help you on standardized tests. Even as we recognize the power and importance of creativity, we negate the actual work of it. And by work I mean play. I want to argue for the pointless, the nonsense, the impractical and the absolutely useless. It is only through these that we reach a point where we might, at some point, come up with something beautiful or original or world enhancing. The road to a good idea is littered with thousands of terrible ideas. And by terrible ideas, I mean fun and interesting ideas that aren't what you need at just that moment. In fact, we're taught to hide the "bad" ideas. The impractical ideas. The nonsense. To only give the ideas that we know are winners and practical solutions. These leads to boring people, afraid of change, waiting for someone else to say something stupid so they can laugh at it and feel superior.

Do Interface Standards Stifle Design Creativity?
No design standard can ever specify a complete user interface. Thus, by definition, much design work remains, even if the designer is committed to complying with the appropriate standards . Often, the most important design elements are those that cannot be specified by a standard, since the standard cannot know the specifics of the individual domain addressed by the design. For example, I was recently involved in the design of an e-commerce site. The draft home page had three ways of getting to the products: search and two navigation schemes, both of which were presented as simple lists of choices. One navigation scheme was structured according to the way most users think about the domain; the other scheme was structured according to the way many of the manufacturer's own staff thought about their product lines. Results from usability testing:
  • success rate of when people used the navigation scheme structured according to most users' mental model
  • success rate of when people used the navigation scheme structured according to the company's internal thinking
Conclusion: the second navigation scheme was dropped from the design, even though this pained some of the project members. The second scheme had its advantages for those people who used it correctly, but it led most users into trouble, so it did more harm than good.

Donna Perdue Aradise is a full-service advertising and Web design design firm that, in addition to Web design, specializes in multi-media advertising and other results-oriented marketing tools for the needs and budgets of our clients. Although outside the paradigm, think of us as your creative department that never physically comes to work but is always there to help you make things happen in a big way. There are some real advantages to this way of thinking. First, your business only has to purchase the services you need, when you need them. This saves on overhead costs such as equipment, office space, salaries, and benefits. Project costs are specified in a contract and monitored on a regular basis.
