Creativity on speed
It's been said that art, creativity, and innovation are about the recognition and mastery of constraints. "Man built most nobly when limitations were at their greatest."
— Frank Lloyd Wright "In art, truth and reality begin when one no longer understands what one is doing or what one knows, and when there remains an energy that is all the stronger for being constrained, controlled and compressed."
— Henri Matisse One of the best ways to be truly creative breakthrough creativeis to be forced to go fast. Really, really, really fast. From the brain's perspective, it makes sense that extreme speed can unlock creativity. When forced to come up with something under extreme time constraints, we're forced to rely on the more intuitive, subconscious parts of our brain. The time pressure can help suppress the logical/rational/ critical parts of your brain. It helps you EQ up subconscious creativity (so-called "right brain") and EQ down conscious thought ("left brain").

If you don't, you might want to stop what you're doing and consider this: The Knowledge Economy as we know it is being eclipsed by something new call it the Creativity Economy. Even as policymakers and pundits wring their hands over the outsourcing of engineering, software writing, accounting, and myriad other high-tech, high-end service jobs not to mention the move of manufacturing to Asia U.S. companies are evolving to the next level of economic activity. What was once central to corporations price, quality, and much of the left-brain, digitized analytical work associated with knowledge is fast being shipped off to lower-paid, highly trained Chinese and Indians, as well as Hungarians, Czechs, and Russians. Increasingly, the new core competence is creativity the right-brain stuff that smart companies are now harnessing to generate top-line growth. The game is changing. It isn't just about math and science anymore. It's about creativity, imagination, and, above all, innovation.

Paulo Coelho is one of my favorite authors. I think it was him who said that we need to let go of our attachment to books. Instead of filling up our shelves with books that we read only one, why not give some away to share with others? I guess he infuses this same philosophy with his own writing.

How to Be a More Creative Blogger - Methods of Creativity
Miscellaneous Blog Tips 36 comments Last week while cleaning up my hard drive I came across an old presentation that I gave to a group of young leaders on how to develop your creativity. methods of creativity
So where do creative ideas come from?
    1. Evolution
When new ideas come as a result of building upon previous ones. This is very much a step by step process where at each step the progression in ideas very small but where over time it is significant. Most bloggers enter into this evolutionary process every day with their blogging - taking previously expressed ideas (both their own and those of others) and extending them. A good question to ask
    2. Reapplication
When you look at something old in a new way. The exercise that I did with participants in my presentation to illustrate this point was to give each person a fork and to tell them to come up with as many new uses for a fork as they could in 2 minutes. Most people start that type of exercise somewhat paralyzed by their previous boxing of forks - but breaking outside the box can lead to some interesting (and sometimes useful )discoveries.

An Interview with Adrian Belew, Part Three
Photo credit: Image courtesy of Daryl Darko Welcome to the conclusion of this three-part interview with guitarist, singer, and songwriter Adrian Belew. If you're just jumping in, be sure to hop back to the start to hear Belew talk about collaborating with King Crimson and the Bears, why the last two years have been so productive, and how he lets goes creatively. Adrian Belew on the Web: Adrian Belew.net Elephant Blog Side Four
Cecil Vortex: Is there anything you've learned about the creative process that's surprised you? Adrian Belew: I'm impressed to see that if you work really hard at something, it does eventually pay off. And nothing in my life has proven that to me as much as the creative process. Sometimes you do have to work at it; it doesn't always just flow out of you like lava. Sometimes you really do have to sit and [say], "How am I going to make this work? What can I do?" And really go deep within yourself or at least concentrate to such a degree that it gets tiring, you know? So I'm kind of amazed that the process works and that it's still working. CV: Have you gotten any advice about creativity that particularly stands out?

    What is creativity?
From Human Motivation , 3rd ed., by Robert E. Franken:
    • Creativity is defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others. (page 396)
    • Three reasons why people are motivated to be creative:
    • need for novel, varied, and complex stimulation
    • need to communicate ideas and values
    • need to solve problems (page 396)
    • In order to be creative, you need to be able to view things in new ways or from a different perspective. Among other things, you need to be able to generate new possibilities or new alternatives. Tests of creativity measure not only the number of alternatives that people can generate but the uniqueness of those alternatives. the ability to generate alternatives or to see things uniquely does not occur by change; it is linked to other, more fundamental qualities of thinking, such as flexibility, tolerance of ambiguity or unpredictability, and the enjoyment of things heretofore unknown. What Is Meant By Academic Creativity?
Academic creativity is a way of thinking about, learning, and producing information in school subjects such as science, mathematics, and history. Few experts agree on a precise definition, but when we say the word, everyone senses a similar feeling. When we are creative, we are aware of its special excitement. Creative thinking and learning involve such abilities as evaluation (especially the ability to sense problems, inconsistencies, and missing elements); divergent production (e.g., fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration); and redefinition. Creative learning is a natural, healthy human process that occurs when people become curious and excited. In contrast, learning by authority requires students to use thinking skills such as recognition, memory, and logical reasoningthe abilities most frequently assessed by traditional tests of intelligence and scholastic aptitude. Children prefer to learn in creative ways rather than just memorizing information provided by a teacher or parents. They also learn better and sometimes faster.

updated Jan. 3, 2006 author biography T he above illustration is typical of a kindergarten child's uninhibited pre schematic drawing of herself. Most five year olds are totally confident that they can draw, sing, and dance. Tragically, within three or four years this child, if she is typical, will experience a crisis of confidence. She will no longer feel competent or creative. As teachers, we are often partly to blame for the diminished inclination to be creative as children become socialized and more intelligent. I write this as an art teacher for other art teachers. However, I think teachers in every area need to reflect on what they are doing that tends to foster or hinder the creative critical thinking that is so essential as a survival and success skill in today's world. Creative readers, whatever they teach, will recognize their own lessons and projects in what I describe in this article. In the development of cognition, the ability to imagine is among the most advanced of all human traits. Why would any teacher want to ignore or squelch the imagination. top of article WHEN IS FREEDOM A BAD IDEA?
