Results from evaluation of a long pulse pilot data acquisition system on MAST
Fusion Engineering and Design Volume 81, Issues 15-17 July 2006 Pages 1759-1763 G.J. McArdle and P.G. Milne Abstract The approach to data capture and management was simplified to minimise development time. A simple Linux shell script running on each device was found sufficient to automate the whole acquisition cycle, and this was successfully commissioned in one day. This approach avoided the need for compiled programs but prevented use of the in-house standard shot file archiving library. Instead, each channel's data was written to a separate file as a simple array of samples. This work around was found to offer advantages in terms of flexibility, simplicity and scalability.

Supervisory control can analyze the data acquired from remote equipment throughout a system, and command corresponding adjustments across the system to maintain safe, efficient operation. In utility applications, these adjustments can redistribute power, or pipeline flow, to best serve current demand, and to bypass equipment failures and safeguard equipment and operations. While mobile equipment location and dispatch could fit within the definition of SCADA systems, the specialized needs of the application are addressed on our Vehicle Tracking applications page. SCADA system users demand highly reliable communications equipment, and Kantronics delivers. Reliability starts at the factory with thorough product testing before the equipment goes out the door, resulting in a low 0.003% warranty return rate. Our quality firmware follows up with error detection to ensure that data reception errors don't make it through to your system. A choice of protocols allows you to select the operating modes most appropriate to your application. All along the way, our friendly and experienced staff stand ready to assist you in selecting the most appropriate solutions for your communication needs, including the following Kantronics models: Talon UDC Data Radios combine a radio modem and transmitter in a self-contained, compact package. All you have to add are power and an antenna. These data radios are available with built-in analog and digital inputs and outputs in addition to the standard I/O, further minimizing external cabling and equipment. These data radios are available in VHF or UHF Land Mobile Radio bands. If your system includes mobile components, Talon radios are available with a built-in GPS module. See the

    SCADA
    - SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) is a category of software application program for process control , the gathering of data in real time from remote locations in order to control equipment and conditions. SCADA is used in power plants as well as in oil and gas refining, telecommunications, transportation, and water and waste control. SCADA systems include hardware and software components. The hardware gathers and feeds data into a computer that has SCADA software installed. The computer then processes this data and presents it in a timely manner. SCADA also records and logs all events into a file stored on a hard disk or sends them to a printer. SCADA warns when conditions become hazardous by sounding alarms. LAST UPDATED: 31 May 2001

In the meantime, cybersecurity of electric utility SCADA systems has come under increased scrutiny in recent years, as electric utilities work to become compliant with NERC CIP (critical infrastructure protection) standards (view articles) . The findings of a recent utility industry survey indicate that SCADA cybersecurity is a very real concern, as 20 percent of the survey's respondents believed that their SCADA systems have already been subjected to outside threats (View article"Study reveals concerns about utility industry security breaches") . Compounding the problem of shoring up electric utility SCADA systems is the fact that different technologies and techniques may be required depending on whether the utility is working to secure a newly installed SCADA system or a legacy SCADA system (see article: "Cybersecurity for Legacy SCADA Systems" ) . As utilities seek to learn more about SCADA system cybersecurity, information from recent webcasts on the topic may prove helpful: View Webcasts
While SCADA technology has been in use in electric utilities for some time, technological innovation hasn't slowed. Utilities are now looking to upgrade their aging SCADA systems to maximize reliability and reduce unnecessary costs. One municipal power utility, for instance, has deployed an upgraded SCADA system that combines smart meters and a high-speed satellite network to improve upon their standard configuration of leased phone lines, electric meters and remote terminal units

EURATOM/IST, Lisboa, Portugal Abstract. A heavy ion beam diagnostic for the tokamak ISTTOK has been developed with the aim of measuring the temporal evolution of the electron density, plasma potential, electron temperature and poloidal magnetic field radial profiles. The control and data acquisition system for this diagnostic is described. This system was designed in a modular and versatile approach based on locally developed VME timing, waveform generator and digitizer modules. Its integration into the ISTTOK control and data acquisition system as well as the first experimental results are also reported. Print publication: Issue 11 (November 1995)

  • DA [Destination Address] sent from the supervisor by the back end (monitoring device) after the supervisor requests it from the back end. The bits in this field represent a unique identifier. The first bit may also represent whether the message source is a supervisor or a controller. This allows the supervisor to know if it communicating with one of its own or other devices. While there is no current need for controllers and supervisors to communicate with each other, such functionality might be required in the future. The source address will occupy 8 bits, which allows 256 devices. If first bit device specification is used, 128 controllers and 128 supervisors can be used.

    ADVISORY BULLETIN: ADB-99-03
Date: July 7, 1999 To: Owners and Operators of Hazardous Liquid and Natural Gas Pipeline Facilities Subject: Potential Service Interruptions in Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems Purpose: Inform pipeline system owners and operators of potential operational limitations associated with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and the possibility of those problems leading to or aggravating pipeline releases. Advisory: Each pipeline operator should review the capacity of its SCADA system to ensure that the system has resources to accommodate normal and abnormal operations on its pipeline system. In addition, SCADA configuration and operating parameters should be periodically reviewed, and adjusted if necessary, to assure that the SCADA computers are functioning as intended. Further, operators should assure system modifications do not adversely affect overall performance of the SCADA system. We recommend that the operator consult with the original system designer. Background: During an Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS) investigation of a recent pipeline incident, OPS inspectors identified inadequate SCADA performance as an operational safety concern. Immediately prior to and during the incident, the SCADA system exhibited poor performance that inhibited the pipeline controllers from seeing and reacting to the development of an abnormal pipeline operation.

        The Challenge:
Controlling a machine that tests automobile clutch torque converters by causing them to slip and/or lock-up, all while collecting pertinent data at speeds up to 2000 HZ and storing it to a PC hard drive for post-test analysis.
        The Solution:
Using the inherent bitmap and boolean control features of National Instruments LabVIEW to create a graphical monitoring screen, as well as using LabVIEW with SCXI hardware to implement the control system for the machine and high-speed data acquisition.
        Introduction
An Automotive component testing firm needed two automated test stands to perform Clutch Torque Converter Slip tests. LabVIEW combined machine control, data acquisition, data logging, and user interfacing into one compact software application. The SCXI hardware provided a high degree of flexibility in I/O setup, allowing for future addition of signals to/from the control system.
The graphical user interface (GUI) had to be suitable for operators who are heavily involved in mechanical design and possess limited Windows experience. LabVIEW was used to implement a graphical monitoring screen that features dynamic objects resembling mechanical equipment and pneumatic diagrams.
