Overview
CogSci 2008 is the annual meeting of the Cognitive Science Society for basic and applied cognitive science research. We encourage researchers from around the world to submit their best work and to attend CogSci08 to hear about the latest theories and data from the world's best cognitive science researchers. Each year, in addition to submitted papers, we invite researchers to highlight some aspect of cognitive science. This year, we are highlighting The Development and Decline of Cognitive Function . Finally, we are also celebrating the 30th Anniversary of CogSci with a special symposium. The co-chairs for this year's conference are Vladimir Sloutsky Brad Love , and Ken McRae The conference will be held in Washington, D.C. at the beautiful and newly renovated Omni Shoreham Hotel , July 23 - 26. Since 1930, the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C. has played host to presidents, world leaders, and inaugural balls, making it a truly historic Washington landmark. This grand luxury hotel is nestled on 11 acres in picturesque Rock Creek Park in northwest Washington, D.C., and is only steps away from the National Zoo, numerous other attractions, a plethora of restaurants, and the metrorail. The deadline for all classes of submissions is Friday, February 1, 2008.

Linguistics and Cognitive Science
  • Molly Babel (UC - Berkeley) "Language attrition: The interaction of bilingualism and language change." Please join us Tuesday, January 22nd in 104 Reed Hall at 4:30pm.
    • In this talk, I present two distinct types of phonetic change documented in the youngest speaker of Mono Lake Northern Paiute, a moribund language indigenous to California. Elderly speakers of the language whose data is also reported have not experienced the sound changes. It is argued that the distinct changes are due to English dominance and the interaction between the youngest speaker's mental representations of English and Northern Paiute sound systems.
Symposium, "Sounds and Tastes of the Caucasus: Music, Language, and Food in Georgia". October 25, 2007. Co-Sponsored by the Linguistics and Cognitive Science Program. Congratulations to Jessica Glago 08 (team leader) and Ari Bezman 07 , members of the winning team of Google's Campus 3D contest. A team of Dartmouth students has won Google's Build Your Campus in 3D Competition. Google asked "how would your campus look in 3D" and challenged students to use Google SketchUp and Google Earth software to find out. The Dartmouth group was one of seven winning teams chosen from more than 350 entries. To read more, click the following link to go to the

    What is Cognitive Science?
Cognitive science is a multidsciplinary enterprise that comprises areas of cognitive psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, computer science and philosophy. Cognitive science investigates the capacities underlying intelligent behaviors in organisms and artefacts. These include the capacity for perception, learning, memory, thought, and language. The common denominator in all these phenomena is that they can be studied from the point of view of representing and processing information. Cognitive science is based on naturalistic research methods such as psychological experimentation, neurophysiological measurement, mathematical modeling and philosophical argumentation.
