It lies at the confluence of psychology, linguistics, anthropology, computer science, educational and cognitive development, neuroscience, neurobiology, philosophy, and certain areas of mathematics. Cognitive science has arguably been the most important development in the study of human thinking in the past twenty years; its influence can be seen across a wide variety of disciplines, from logic to communication disorders. Welcome to the Cognitive Science Program at the University of Connecticut
Cognitive science is the study of how intelligent beings (including people, animals, and machines) perceive, act, know, and think. It explores the process and content of thought as observed in individuals, distributed through communities, manifested in the structure and meaning of language, modeled by algorithms, and contemplated by philosophies of mind. Its models are formulated using concepts drawn from many disciplines, including psychology, linguistics, logic, computer science, anthropology, and philosophy, and they are tested using evidence from psychological experiments, clinical studies, field studies, computer simulations, and neurophysiological observation. The Cognitive Science Program includes both a major and minor in cognitive science. For more information, go to Academics The Cognitive Science Colloquium Series hosts several talks every semester and provides a lively forum for interdisciplinary discussion. Center for Cognitive Science The Puzzle of the Mind Introduction Home Academic Programs Activities and Events Links ... Resources The Center in Context The Center for Cognitive Science is the representation on the University at Buffalo campus of an academic and private-sector movement, named "cognitive science", that has been expanding over the last two decades both in the U.S. and abroad. The aim of this development is to investigate the nature of cognition, i.e., of intellective processes as exhibited either by the human mind or by computer. Most centrally, cognitive science is the study of how the mind works, both in its conceptual organization and in its computational and neural infrastructure. Accordingly, cognitive science has brought together researchers from a number of traditionally separate disciplines primarily, computer science psychology linguistics philosophy ... anthropology , and neuroscience in order to build a new and unified understanding of cognition that is compounded from the different disciplinary perspectives and that moves beyond them.

Essays and links on embodied and situated approaches to cognition, ranging from Artificial Life to Phenomenology, and much else.
    http://www.magneticfields.org/sky/aarc/noncartesian.html
    Non-Cartesian Cognitive Science
Traditional Cognitive Science is Cartesian in the sense that it takes as fundamental the distinction between the mental and the physical, the mind and the world, the subject and the object. It is this Cartesianism which leads to such claims as that cognition must be representational and that what sets cognizers apart is the fact that they exhibit "aboutness". It is the aim of this page to bring together non-Cartesian approaches to the study of cognition. That means that the main point which holds this page together is the idea that mind and body form a unity , not a union. Guttorm Floistad (1983) speaks of Spinozism to allude to non-Cartesian approaches to the mental. Under that heading, there is room for many different themes. Here's a short overview:
    Conscious Experience and Phenomenology
Cartesianism, in its materialist guise, leads to the view that consciousness is an epiphenomenon, that qualia have no causal efficacy. Such a counterintuitive claim does not have to be held by the Spinozist, so she will be interested in the actual content of experiences.
    Body
A direct implication of the claim that mind and body form a unity is that when there is talk of the mind, there must be talk of the body as well. Experiential content is rooted in bodily structure.

MIT's Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences stands at the nexus of neuroscience, biology and psychology. We combine these disciplines to study specific aspects of the brain and mind including: vision, movement systems, learning and memory, neural and cognitive development, language and reasoning. Working collaboratively, we apply our expertise, tools, and techniques to address and answer both fundamental and universal questions about how the brain and mind work.

Culture influences brain function, MIT imaging shows
People from different cultures use their brains differently to solve the same visual perceptual tasks, researchers report in the first brain imaging study of its kind, focusing on mapping brain activity patterns that reflect different mental operations. Missing protein may be key to autism A missing brain protein that helps in the development of synapses may be one of the culprits behind autism and other brain disorders, according to work done by Li-Huei Tsai and colleagues published in the Dec. 6 issue of Neuron.

    http://www.cogsci.ucla.edu/Background/index.html
Cognitive Science, as a discipline, is concerned with learning how animals (and machines) acquire knowledge, represent that knowledge, and how they manipulate those representations. The study of Cognitive Science is fundamentally interdisciplinary. To understand functions of mind, scientists must increasingly apply the tools, methodology, and findings of one discipline to the problems of another. Cognitive psychologists, for example, must be familiar with computer science and artificial intelligence in order to design sophisticated models that emulate mental processes. Artificial intelligence The advent of high performance workstations, advanced networking technologies and massively parallel supercomputers is making possible the establishment of environments for interdisciplinary cooperation that were heretofore unthinkable. Intelligent information processing in biological systems can in principle be emulated by machines, and in practice, the construction of both hardware machines and software models that emulate aspects of thought, perception, learning, comprehension, coordination, vision and detailed brain function are bringing researchers together from previously isolated fields.
