Search Sustainable Development Topics Climate change Climate change formed part of the thematic cluster with energy, industrial development, and air pollution/atmosphere reviewed by the Commission on Sustainable Development at its fourteenth session in 2006 and fifteenth session in 2007. The Earth's climate system has demonstrably changed on both global and regional scales since the pre-industrial era, with some of these changes attributable to human activities. The atmospheric concentrations of key anthropogenic greenhouse gases (i.e. carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and tropospheric ozone (O3) reached their highest recorded levels, primarily due to the combustion of fossil fuels, agriculture, and land use changes. The consensus scientific basis on climate change is provided by the I ntergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), established in the late 1980s under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and UNEP. The summary of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report, released in early 2007, concludes that the warming of the climate system is unequivocal and accelerating. It goes on to state that the observed increase in global average temperatures is very likely (greater than 90 % confidence) due to GHG emissions from human activities, up from greater than 60% confidence in its 2001 assessment report. Sustainable Automobile Transport: Book Review
Sustainable Automobile Transport (SAT) is a good title for a recent book by, Lisa Ryan and Hal Turton, on motorised transport. The title is appropriate as it stretches the idea of sustainability beyond its sensible definition, reflecting a major flaw in the book. The aim implied by the subtitle 'Shaping Climate Change Policy' is inevitably damaged by this basic mismatch between more sustainable technology and real sustainability . In it's most elementary form sustainability is the ability to continue without coming up against the physical limits of a system. Being 'more sustainable' in the context of carbon emissions is just taking a more gradual path towards destabilisation of the climate. I was left with the feeling that i hadn't seen a real path towards sustainability, the real conclusion to be drawn is that automobile transportation is an inherently unsustainable sector and that a more holistic approach that includes mass transit, planning and public education is required. SAT therefore fails in it's main objective but actually offers a very good guide to the more humble task of guiding us towards the most effective policies and combinations thereof to reduce the climatic impact of this highly significant sector.

Renewables – Some Important Stories of the Day
January 23rd, 2008 by Bill Hewitt The EU’s Thrust on Energy and Climate – Today the EU announced its comprehensive renewables plan. Go here for a wealth of information from them, including releases, video, speeches, key documents etc. I’ve talked about and will be talking more about the EU’s plans.  Reuters’ very useful “Planet Ark” has this “factbox” on what the EU intends to be doing. Here’s one pretty significant overall goal: 20 percent reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases in 2020 compared to 1990 level. The cut would be increased to 30 percent if there is an international agreement on the issue. Tax Credits for Renewables – In the final energy bill from Congress from December (see It’s A Wrap… and numerous other posts), one pretty important component was left out, along with the 15% Renewable Portfolio Standard for electric utilities: the extension of tax credits for renewables.

Climate change is among the most pervasive threats to the Earth today. We have the power to address its root causes and limit its impact on the planet. Without action, climate change will cause the extinction of countless species and destroy some of the world's most precious ecosystems, putting millions of people at risk. WWF is a leader in the field of climate science and a persuasive advocate for emissions reductions and increases in the use of energy efficient technologies. Partnering with innovators in business and industry, WWF is influencing behavior and changing attitudes. Although this book is still in a very preliminary state, we seem to be moving toward a cohesive structure. The book is really two parts: first, a primer on the science of climate change, and second, a study of societal implications of climate change. The first part deals with much more concrete, physically based principles. As such, it can be developed more easily. The second part is potentially more controversial, but not necessarily so; for the early stages of development, the second part should probably be limited to generalities and external links.

Climate is a broad term, but it always describes a long-term average of a system. Often 'climate' is used to mean the long-term mean state of the atmosphere, including temperature, humidity, and wind. In other contexts, 'climate' can include the oceanic state, the cryosphere (snow and sea-ice), the biosphere, and sometimes even the lithosphere (Earth's crust). Meteorologists and atmospheric scientists often say that

Read the draft climate change recommendations
Our climate change work has reached an important milestone. The Departments of Ecology and Community, Trade and Economic Development have completed the state's draft interim climate change report. This interim report was prepared in response to the executive order signed by Governor Gregoire in February 2007, establishing goals for reductions in climate pollution, increases in jobs, and reductions in expenditures on imported fuel. Washington is especially vulnerable to climate change – we depend on snow pack for summer stream flows that feed our rivers, hydroelectricity, and much of our public water supply; our nearly 3,000 miles of coastline is vulnerable to the expected rise in sea levels, threatening our coastal communities and our infrastructure, and the resulting losses in habitat threaten our fish and wildlife.

Overview Direct impacts Mitigation impacts Adaptation impacts ... History UNEP-WCMC aims to put authoritative knowledge on biodiversity and climate change at the heart of decision-making, enabling better links between the climate and biodiversity policy worlds. There is an urgent need for accessible information on the likely impacts of climate change on biodiversity. As measures to address climate change and cope with its effects are increasingly deployed, it is also critical to analyse their possible benefits and risks to biodiversity and ecosystem services. UNEP-WCMC works with a wide range of partners, including members of the Cambridge Conservation Forum climate change group. We are now actively developing projects, seeking new partners and looking for support in order to use our resources in the unfolding debate.
