Civil engineers not only develop the buildings and infrastructure in which we live, work, and travel, but they also work to maintain and improve them as they grow older. The work of civil engineers, therefore, involves societal issues such as energy conservation and the safety of the structures themselves, to the development of new technologies to facilitate the progress of the field into the future. Coursework includes engineering theory, design, technical classes on the nature of certain materials such as concrete and steel, and feasibility analysis, among others.

Civil Engineering Overview
Preparation Day in the Life Specialization ... Podcast
From the pyramids of Egypt to the international space station, civil engineers have always faced the challenges of the future - advancing civilization and building our quality of life. Today, the world is undergoing vast changes the technological revolution, population growth, environmental concerns, and more. All create unique challenges for civil engineers of every specialty. The next decades will be the most creative, demanding, and rewarding of times for civil engineers, and now is the best time to find the right career for you. Civil engineers are in the forefront of technology. They are the leading users of sophisticated high-tech products - applying the very latest concepts in computer-aided design (CAD) during design, construction, project scheduling, and cost control. Civil engineering is about community service, development, and improvement the planning, design, construction, and operation of facilities essential to modern life, ranging from transit systems to offshore structures to space satellites. Civil engineers are problem solvers, meeting the challenges of pollution, traffic congestion, drinking water and energy needs, urban redevelopment, and community planning.
Our future as a nation will be closely tied to space, energy, the environment, and our ability to interact with and compete in the global economy. You, as a civil engineer, will perform a vital role in linking these themes and improving quality of life for the 21st century.

Civil Engineering occupies a prominent position as one of the major fields in the engineering profession. Civil engineers are concerned with all aspects of the conception, planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the infrastructure and facilities that are essential to modern life. Civil engineering projects are typically characterized by extreme size, complexity, durability, and cost. Examples include bridges, buildings, transportation facilities, tunnels, coastal facilities, dams, foundations, and waterways. B.S., M.S., M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees are offered in Civil Engineering. Lehigh has internationally recognized graduate research and education programs in Structural Engineering . Graduates have the knowledge and analytical problem-solving capabilities needed to lead and innovate within multi-disciplinary teams in technologically complex environments for the civil infrastructure. We conduct a fundamental yet innovative program of education and research that focuses on significant advances that cut across all large-scale infrastructure systems of our society.Major advances will include: new structural materials and systems; new earthquake resistant structures that improve the performance of existing steel and precast concrete systems; infrastructure hazard mitigation processes and technology to provide reliable mitigation technology from multi hazards including fire and blast loads; intelligent infrastructure systems that assess time-dependent performance; and simulation, measurement and evaluation of in-service structures. M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are offered in Structural Engineering

Introduction Considered as one of the oldest engineering disciplines, Civil Engineering involves planning, designing and executing structural works. The profession deals with a wide variety of engineering tasks including designing, supervision and construction activities of public works like roads, bridges, tunnels, buildings, airports, dams, water works, sewage systems, ports etc. and offers a multitude of challenging career opportunities. A civil engineer is responsible for planning and designing a project, constructing the project to the required scale, and maintenance of the product. A civil engineer requires not only a high standard of engineering knowledge but also supervisory and administrative skills. The planning part of their work involves site investigation, feasibility studies, creating solutions to complications that may occur and the actual designing of structures. They have to work with the guidelines of the local government authority and get plans approved by the relevant authority. They may prepare cost estimates and set construction schedules. Construction work involves dealing with clients, architects, government officials, contactors and the supervision of work according to standards. Their work also involves the maintenance and repair of the project.

    Civil Engineering Home
Engineering is a term applied to the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences, gained by study, experience, and practice, is applied to the efficient use of the materials and forces of nature. Engineers are the ones who have received professional training in pure and applied science. Before the middle of the 18th century, large-scale construction work was usually placed in the hands of military engineers. Military engineering involved such work as the preparation of topographical maps, the location, design, and construction of roads and bridges; and the building of forts and docks; see Military Engineering below. In the 18th century, however, the term civil engineering came into use to describe engineering work that was performed by civilians for nonmilitary purposes. Civil engineering is the broadest of the engineering fields. Civil engineering focuses on the infrastructure of the world which include Water works, Sewers, Dams, Power Plants, Transmission Towers/Lines, Railroads, Highways, Bridges, Tunnels, Irrigation Canals, River Navigation, Shipping Canals, Traffic Control, Mass Transit, Airport Runways, Terminals, Industrial Plant Buildings, Skyscrapers , etc. Among the important subdivisions of the field are
