History Channel contest, City of the Future: A Design and Engineering Challenge, presented jointly by ASCE and the American Institute of Architects. The first phase asks designers to imagine bold, livable cities 100 years from now. The winner, Beyer Blinder Belle, envisioned a Capital FORTway (Future Oriented Renewable Technologies) to protect and sustain the city. Engineering students in the Washington D.C., Atlanta and San Francisco areas will compete in the next phase to find engineering solutions for these future cities and compete to win $5,000.

NTSB Says Design Flaw Found in I-35W Bridge The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) today announced that a serious design flaw was found in some of the gusset plates on the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis, which collapsed on August 1, 2007. As a result, the NTSB issued a recommendation that the Federal Highway Administration (FHwA) require bridge owners to verify that the stress levels in all structural elements, including gusset plates, remain within applicable requirements whenever planned modifications or operational changes may significantly increase stresses. This would apply to all non-load-path-redundant steel truss bridges within the National Bridge Inventory.
ASCE urges its members to review the NTSB's report and recommendations.

Defining the Future of CEE
Many people look at Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering and see separate disciplines. At Stanford, we see links and interdependencies through which some of the most difficult and urgent problems facing mankind may be solved.
Disciplinary Synergy
We categorize CEE into three main areas: the Built Environment, Atmosphere and Energy, and the Water Environment . Exploring the relationships between these categories informs the direction of our curriculum. Some of the intersections are depicted in the diagram on this page; others will emerge as we continue down this path.
Training Leaders
The Civil and Environmental Engineering department is committed to finding solutions to our major sustainability challenges this century, and to educating and training the leaders who will have a large impact on our profession and on society. Message From the Department Chair
Starting about 200 years ago, engineering education in this country was available only to military engineers, who were educated at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Civil(ian) engineering was the first non-military engineering discipline; formal schools of civil engineering began to emerge in the U.S. in the mid-1800s.
Today, civil engineering is a very broad fieldbroader than the other engineering disciplines. Civil engineers build the civil infrastructurebuildings, bridges, airports, tunnels, roads, etc. They are also concerned with the foundations of these structures, and this requires knowledge of the mechanics of the soil beneath them. Civil engineers also solve problems related to water supply and waste treatment and the design and construction of ports and harbors. [continued]
Damaged flood walls in New Orleans, LA after Hurricane Katrina. Professor Dalrymple was part of the first official team of engineers to examine the breaches around the city, looking for the failure mechanisms.
