The beauty of Chernoff Hall lies in a multi-disciplinary conformability that does not have one branch of chemistry forcing its will upon another. This unobtrusive versatility stems from the "intelligent service module" design achieved by the architects, which translated into the labs being built around a core space, allowing adaptability to future needs. The use of this module in an academic structure is unique because it is usually only seen in industrial buildings. "By bringing all the services to one point in each module allows the future reconfiguration of each lab to meet changing requirements at minimal expense," says Rick Boswell, dept. manager at Chernoff Hall. Energy Savings Through American Chemistry
The U.S. business of chemistry is unique. We use energy to save energy. We are the principal supplier of materials that make the U.S. economy more energy-efficient. From insulation materials, roof coatings, lightweight vehicle parts and energy-saving tires; to appliances, light bulbs and materials for wind and solar power, our industry is essential to the nation’s efforts to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As one of America’s most energy-intensive sectors, we’re improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our own operations.

You are here: Home Departments Chemistry Welcome to the web site of the Department of Chemistry. We are one of the largest departments in the University of Sheffield, with an outstanding record in both teaching and research. The department is located centrally in the Dainton and Richard Roberts buildings, close to the new Information Commons resource centre and Student Union. Undergraduate intake is around 150 students per year into our wide portfolio of B.Sc. and M. Chem. degree programmes. In addition to our popular pure Chemistry degree programmes, we also offer courses that allow students to spend a year in industry, or at a partner university overseas (Europe, North America, Australia or Japan). Students can also study interdisciplinary joint-honours courses in which Chemistry is combined with other subjects varying from Maths to Chemical Engineering to Enterprise Management and Informatics. The very positive feedback provided by the 2006 National Student Survey attests to the high quality of the teaching and learning experience in the department. FIESER POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP The Mary Fieser Postdoctoral Fellowships Program seeks to enhance diversity and excellence in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology (CCB) of Harvard University by providing postdoctoral fellowship support to women and groups that are historically underrepresented in science and to others whose background, experiences and research interests will contribute to academic diversity in CCB. Promising scholars male and female who have been historically underrepresented in chemistry (including but not limited to African American, American Indian, and Hispanic/Latino) are encouraged to apply. Up to 12 fellowships may be awarded in 2008. Fellowships will be for an initial period of one year, with potential for renewal of up to one year (a two-year maximum level of support). Stipends will be targeted to the NRSA year ‘0’ amount and will include health insurance and other benefits. Applicants are required to have completed all PhD requirements prior to arrival. All applicants must be eligible to work in the United States before arrival. Faculty in CCB are listed at the following web address: http://www.chem.harvard.edu/research/index.php.
