Atomic and Molecular Structure
  • The periodic table displays the elements in increasing atomic number and shows how periodicity of the physical and chemical properties of the elements relates to atomic structure. As a basis for understanding this concept:
  • Students know how to relate the position of an element in the periodic table to its atomic number and atomic mass. Students know how to use the periodic table to identify metals, semimetals, nonmetals, and halogens. Students know how to use the periodic table to identify alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and transition metals, trends in ionization energy, electronegativity, and the relative sizes of ions and atoms. Students know how to use the periodic table to determine the number of electrons available for bonding.

Gone are the orange leather chairs that many an alum sat in for department seminars and Saturday morning BIP (Basolo-Ibers-Pearson) chalk talks. Tech Conference Room K140 was recently renovated through generous alumni donations in memory of Professor Fred Basolo who passed away in February of this year. To dedicate this room in a style Fred would have loved, our illustrious Northwestern Ph.D. Chemistry Alumni, Professor Harry Gray of Cal Tech and Professor Ken Raymond of UC- Berkeley returned to lead an inaugural BIP session this fall. The Basolo family attended as well as faculty, students and staff from the Chemistry Department. Many fond remembrances of Professor Basolo were shared and it was clear that Fred's spirit lives on at Northwestern! Basolo Room Dedication Photos
