About the Department Ultimately, the role of chemical engineers is to apply chemistry, especially biological, organic, and inorganic chemistry. Applying chemistry provides the gasoline, safe drugs, shampoo, textiles, plastics, computer chips, paints, and so many things that make up our everyday lives. To make all these things, chemical engineers combine chemistry, mathematics, physics, biology, economics, management, and computer science. These elements are used together to analyze and design systems, including chemical processes and products. At UMass Amherst, undergraduate and graduate students learn how to apply sciences to manufacture this "stuff of life" while building the analytical and innovation skills needed to create new solutions. Lectures, computer use, problem-solving in and out of class, laboratory experiences, and intense discussion are all parts of this challenging major. Going beyond the traditional educational environment, our students hone their skills in a model computer classroom and in research supervised by the faculty. Throughout the world, UMass Chemical Engineering is particularly known for four areas:

Chemical Engineering
Everything around us is made of chemicals. The earth, trees, rocks, cars, houses, and even you are all bunches of different chemicals. When chemicals get together, they sometimes react to form new chemicals, like when food reacts with the chemicals in your stomach. Chemical changes can be used to produce all kinds of useful products. Chemical Engineers use their knowledge of chemistry to discover and manufacture better plastics, paints, fuels, fibers, medicines, fertilizers, semiconductors, paper, and all other kinds of chemicals, by carrying out chemical reactions and purifications. Chemical Engineers also play an important role in protecting the environment, inventing cleaner technologies, calculating environmental impacts, and studying the fate of chemicals in the environment. Many Chemical Engineers are involved in recycling materials. Recycling helps the environment, and used materials get made into lots of neat products. Some Chemical Engineers work in factories, while others work in laboratories. Still others work in universities, consulting firms, engineering firms, law offices, government agencies, and many other types of jobs.

Typically 50 to 75% of our graduate students are in the doctoral program. Clarkson also maintains a healthy research-based Master of Science program and a project-based Master of Engineering program The Chemical Engineering faculty offices, research laboratories, and administrative offices are all located in CAMP. Research interests in the department are varied. However, there is a common thread linking many of these interests to materials processing. Supported by the Federal government and industry, these cover a broad range which includes aerosols, crystal growth, surface reactions, nucleation and phase transitions, semi-conductor processing, polymer fabrication and properties, and the characterization of fine particles as well as new materials. The faculty obtain in excess of $1.2 million annually in external research support, and the graduate students and faculty members publish vigorously in respected journals, and present numerous talks at national and international meetings. Faculty members also serve on national committees and provide consulting services to government and industry. Laboratory Research Facilities
