As well as producing useful materials, chemical engineering is also concerned with pioneering valuable new materials and techniques; an important form of research and development . A person employed in this field is called a chemical engineer Chemical engineering largely involves the design and maintenance of chemical processes for large-scale manufacture. Chemical engineers in this branch are usually employed under the title of process engineer . The development of the large-scale processes characteristic of industrialized economies is a feat of chemical engineering, not chemistry. Indeed, chemical engineers are responsible for the availability of the modern high-quality materials that are essential for running an industrial economy.

Welcome to the world of pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, artificial kidneys, oil refineries, solar panels, clean water, and biocompatible polymers! Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the chemical and physical processes used to develop and make these and many other products. Chemical engineers have made major contributions to the technological infrastructure of modern society. Princeton's Chemical Engineering Department was established in 1930. Over the years, it has earned a position of distinction in both undergraduate and graduate education. Our department is a community of scholars where every member's contributions to the creation and transmission of knowledge in our discipline are valued. Whether you are interested in undergraduate studies, graduate studies, or post-doctoral work, I hope that you will find our web site useful and informative. Pablo Debenedetti , Acting Chair

Chemical Engineering at Caltech has a long tradition. Started as applied chemistry by Arthur Amos Noyes, the department led the famous Project 37 of the American Petroleum Institute that provided much of the basic knowledge on thermodynamics and phase equilibria in hydrocarbon systems. Subsequent developments, under the able guidance of a series of distinguished educators and scientists, have led the department to the forefront of research and teaching in chemical engineering. At the present time, the chemical engineering faculty at Caltech is one of the most distinguished and innovative in the world, actively leading chemical engineering research into new areas of application and involvement. What is a Chemical Engineer?
    a) An Engineer who manufactures chemicals,
    b) A Chemist who works in a factory, or
    c) A glorified Plumber
This is actually a trick question as the correct answer is d) "None of the above." (Note however that chemical engineering students bored with the relentless "pipe-flow example" during fluid dynamics class may begin to think of themselves as simply "glorified plumbers".) The first two incorrect answers make sense based upon the narrow sounding title; "chemical engineer." Surely such a person must be either a "chemist who builds things", or an "engineer who makes chemicals". Yet, the English language has never really made any sense and the name "chemical engineer" is a case in point. "Enough already... go to the bottom
All Right, So What is a Chemical Engineer?
It is true that chemical engineers are comfortable with chemistry , but they do much more with this knowledge than just make chemicals. In fact, the term "chemical engineer" is not even intended to describe the type of work a chemical engineer performs. Instead it is meant to reveal what makes the field different from the other branches of engineering All engineers employ mathematics, physics, and the engineering art to overcome technical problems in a safe and economical fashion

    Department Overview
ItÂ’s a small world, chemically speaking. On a molecular level, our students and faculty at the department of Chemical Engineering are inventing the processes to make the raw materials that become our medicines, fuel, surfboards and cosmetics. From the ongoing investigation of emerging nanotechnologies to the manufacturing of consumer goods, Chemical Engineering students advance knowledge in a way that changes lives. And we do so in an innovative way: teaching through experience. As a relatively small department, our students develop strong working relationships with their professors and gain the opportunity to do meaningful research, both with professors within the department as well as with other departments and industry partners.
