Ceramics
Ceramic materials are inorganic, nonmetallic materials. Most ceramics are compounds between metallic and nonmetallic elements for which the interatomic bonds are either totally ionic or predominantly ionic but having some covalent character. The term ceramic comes from the Greek word keramikos , which means burnt stuff , indicating that desirable properties of these materials are normally achieved through a high-temperature heat treatment process called firing Taken from Materials Science and Engineering: An Introduction , William D. Callister, Jr., , Inc., New York. Ceramic materials are important in today's society. Consider the ceramic engine and what advantages it offers in terms of fuel economy, efficiency, weight savings and performance. Below are three gif's showing a montage of a prototype ceramic engine and some of the internal automotive components made from ceramics. The reference source URL is Kyocera Corporation of Japan

Maya Polychrome Ceramics
The great number of Maya ceramics known today gives us a tantalizing glimpse at the ancient mythological culture of the Maya.
Many of the scribes and artisans who created these vessels employed the use of Maya hieroglyphic writing. They would often follow a pattern or sequence of glyphs (known as the " primary standard sequence ") that was originally thought to be a chant or prayer for the departed. We now know that much of the writing on these vessels described perhaps their function and contents, and might even include the name of the owner or the scribe who painted it. Painting the Maya Universe One of the most thoroughly researched books available today on this topic is Dorie Reent-Budet's Painting the Maya Universe , sometimes referred to as PTMU The Blood of Kings There are resources relating to PTMU at site. They include an HTML Microsoft Excel spreadsheet with with data on the images from the book.
