Fredrick Oakley Successfully Passed His Comprehensive Examination MSTP and Anatomy and Cell Biology Graduate Student, Fredrick Oakley, successfully passed his comprehensive examination on Monday, January 14, 2008. The title of his proposal was "Redox Mediated Signaling in the Toll-like Receptor Family. Fred received his bachelor's degree from Iowa State University in Ames and began the MSTP program at the University of Iowa in 2003. Fred will continue his thesis work in Dr. John Engelhardts laboratory focusing on a sepsis disease model. His studies will investigate the activation of the proinflammatory transcription factor NF-kB through the redox mediated signaling pathways propagated through the interleukin-1 receptor and the toll-like receptor 4. These pathways are central to the initiation and propagation of a septic response, and represent potential therapeutic targets for lowering the 30-50% mortality currently associated with the disease. Congratulations, Fred

GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MOLECULAR CELL AND DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY The graduate program in Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology is an interdepartmental program that offers graduate training towards the Ph.D. degree in the fields of molecular cell biology, cell biology, developmental biology and cancer biology.
In order to provide a wide range of current research opportunities, this program is interdepartmental, comprised primarily of the faculty of the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy and includes additional faculty from several other Departments and Centers at The Medical School.
These include the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Ophthalmology, Urology, Surgery, Neurosurgery and Neurology, the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. Research:
Students have the opportunity to do research in the many areas of modern cell and molecular biology, developmental biology and molecular medicine. Among the major research areas shown in the links to the left, individual laboratories are focusing on specific research topics that include the cytoskeleton, cell surface molecular biology, extracellular matrix, stem cells, metalloproteinases, lens and corneal biology, protein processing and sorting, signal transduction, regulation of gene expression in development and cancer, neuromuscular development, malignant transformation, growth factors, epithelial cell biology, organogenesis and tissue repair, pattern formation in early development, RNA localization, mitochondrial molecular biology and cancer therapeutics.

(L to R) Jianghui Hou, Antonio Gomes, Daniel Goodenough Daniel Goodenough and colleagues provide insights into the mechanisms underlying familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis (FHHNC).
Familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis (FHHNC) is a genetic disorder that can lead to kidney failure. It is characterized by calcium and magnesium loss by the kidneys due to mutations in the genes CLN16 and CLN19 which encode the claudin family proteins claudin 16 and claudin 19, respectively. Claudin s are important components of cellular tight junctions, areas where two cells meet and form a barrier that is almost impermeable to fluid. Loss of function in tight junctions is believed to be responsible for FHHNC, although the mechanisms underlying the specific roles of claudin s 16 and 19 in the process have not been understood. A new study by Daniel Goodenough and colleagues (Hou J, Renigunta A, Konrad M, Gomes AS, Schneeberger EE, Paul DL, Waldegger S, Goodenough DA
