26. Cathedral Cave Geology
Cathedral Cave Preserve Explore, study and protect this unique speleological wonder.
http://cathedralcave.org/geology.htm
All of the caves in the preserve are formed in Mississippian era Redwall Limestone. This limestone was deposited some 330 million years ago when this area was covered with a great sea. Over time the colorado plateau was uplifted and sea levels fell resulting in the large hills and mesas of the area. The caves most likely formed at a time when the water table level was static at the depth of the main cave passages. Current theories postulate that deep level hydrogen sulfide gases worked upward and mixed into the upper level water table. This resulted in a weak acid that dissolved the limestone to create the voids we see today. Later, surface water from rains would also act as a weak acid to dissolve limestone and carry it downward into the cave passages. This calcium laden water would then precipitate out the calcium when it made contact with the air in the cave. This is what forms the beautiful formations throughout the caves.
This is just a basic explanation of the speleogenesis of the caves, as there are many more complicated processes involved. There are a variety of cavers and geologists looking at the caves and over time we will further understand and document these fascinating features.

http://www.beautifulrushmorecave.com/bhgc.html
The Black Hills region is home to some of the most unique caves in the world. They are among the world's most interesting because of their age, evolutionary history, rare formations and complexity. All are precious natural gifts that we may enjoy today and must protect for future generations. Sharing the common bonds of their origin, each is unique in its own way. Located in a band of limestone rock called the "pahasapa limestone" (Large graphic in this link file size is 133k) , the caves encircle the central granite core of the Black Hills. This limestone was created during the Mississippian Period, approximately 360 to 330 million years ago on the bottom of an ancient sea. The present day caves were greatly affected by five events in the area's geologic past. First, the limestone rock was modified by a variety of chemical processes. Second, an early cave and karst system developed in the young limestone rock. Third, the limestone and early caves were buried by other layers of sedimentary rock. They laid dormant and preserved from approximately 320 million years ago until 60 million years ago.

    The article reports on the increase in prices of ABC for digital video recorder (DVR) playback included in advertising deals. In 2007, the television network scored $2.4 billion in commitments, an increase from $2.3 billion. Mike Shaw, president of sales and marketing at ABC, said getting paid for DVR viewers is crucial to the broadcast business plan. That revenue, he said, will encourage the networks to stay as the prolific content producers. Reading Level (Lexile): 1280;
