Dear friends & colleagues: While some of you may have noticed it in my "Signature" below and clicked on it in the past, I am announcing today the formal opening of the professional myriapod website http://www.myriapoda.org/ that is a cooperative venture between myself, at the North Carolina State Museum of Natural Sciences (NCSM), andJason Bond and his doctoral student, Paul Marek, at East Carolina University, in Greenville, North Carolina. If one does a Google search for either "myriapod", "millipede","or "centipede," a host of links pop up, but nearly all are incomplete or contain factual errors, and we have therefore set up this site, which will be periodically updated, to offset these shortcomings.
Of particular interest is providing accurate information for teachers and students at all levels, to hopefully avoid misconceptions. There are sections on basic anatomy of these organisms with references; a table listing some of the many differences between them (it's more than just the number of legs); a section on millipede research taking place at both institutions; one on centipede research taking place here at the NCSM; links to other important myriapod sites; an image gallery that will be continuously expanded as more pictures become available of representatives of myriapod genera, families, and orders; one on projects in progress, etc. I invite you to peruse this site, bookmark it, and use it in the best manner for your purposes.

Cave Biography
Source: Wikipedia , New Mexico]] A cave is a natural underground void large enough for a human to enter. Some people suggest that the term 'cave' should only apply to cavities that have some part which does not receive daylight; however, in popular usage, the term includes smaller spaces like sea caves, rock shelters and grottos. Speleology is the science of exploration and study of all aspects of caves. Exploring a cave for recreation or science may be called "caving", "potholing", or occasionally (onl...

Kolb, director of research and development, and Christ, field mission expert, spent two weeks in the jungle accompanying photographers and scientists. With the VideoRay, they reached depths and captured underwater photographs that might not be possible by divers; identified water conditions; observed isopods and other cave life; and explored tiny passages too small and dangerous for divers. Equipped with a Sony 5 mega pixel camera with a wide-angle adapter, the VideoRay took high-resolution photos of the sacred underwater caves. Kolb described how he and Christ would lug the 70-pound (30 kilo) VideoRay equipment into the jungle each day, thankful it was much lighter than the SCUBA equipment the divers required. Then, Kolb and Christ would lower the VideoRay to a Cenote, start up the tiny generator, and stay for hours measuring water parameters and looking for cave biology. In Cenote Sabak Ha, Kolb recalls tying a chicken foot to the

Learning about Caves
by William R. Elliott Would you like to go on an educational cave tour? Are you looking for a teacher workshop about caves, curriculum guides, or a technical workshop on cave ecology and management? Do you want to read about caves, enlist in a wild caving tour, study cave life on-line, take a college course, or join a "grotto" (caving club)? All of these activities are available in the Ozark Region! Please be aware that tours and classes may change. Educational Cave Tours Please note that most government-operated show caves are closed at some time of the year for bats. Many show caves offer special group rates, especially for schools. Round Spring Cavern , on Highway 19 between Salem and Eminence, is operated by the National Park Service, Ozark National Scenic Riverways. A highly educational tour on basic trails with electric hand lanterns gives the family a feeling of caving. Along the trail you may see a few Cave salamanders, Grotto salamanders and Eastern pipistrelle bats. This extensive cave is rich in speleothems [photo of "The Tobacco Barn"], and the geologic history is more evident than in most caves. Open between Memorial Day and Labor Day, two tours daily limited to 15 people, no reservations, inexpensive admission. School groups are especially welcome. See their web site at www.nps.gov/ozar, which contains a teacher's curriculum guide, More Than Skin Deep and a guide to cave bats. Call 573/858-3297, extension 23.

Dr. John Mylroie, President, Karst Waters Institute
The Karst Waters Institute has continued to move forward since the last report on progress in volume I, number 1 of the Karst Waters Institute Newsletter . Progress has been slow, but continuous. Considering the uncertain economic and political climate in the United States this past year, our progress has been significant. The KWI has advanced on several fronts, and much of that is reported in the various articles that follow. The KWI is sponsoring a major conference on the role of bacteria in karst processes; progress continues on the Karst Hydrology Atlas of West Virginia ; the KWI is centrally involved in an effort to establish a federal aspect of cave and karst research; the KWI has obtained funding to support short courses on cave biology and karst hydrology.

NO ROOM FOR MISTAKES
In the world of scuba diving, exploring underwater caves represents the ultimate challenge - and the most dangerous
100 feet to the entrance of an unexplored cave. Carrying two tanks of compressed air, 50-watt lights to illuminate the darkness and reels of braided line to lay as a guide for the journey back, the scuba-suited Iliffe glides into the cave, a long, underwater tunnel whose course and destination are unknown. Its only previous explorers stopped after less than 200 feet. Iliffe passes blind cave fish and shrimp, the end of the line laid by the previous explorers and scalloped walls with occasional dried-mud patterns preserved in the rock. He collects plankton and other small creatures in a special net. At about 1,000 feet into the cave, Iliffe turns back. He has passed neither the adjoining corridors nor the stalactites and stalagmites so common among cave systems. He can detect no end in sight.

Spencer Sewage Plant Issue Summary - January 2002 Narrative Summary: The discharge from a new sewage treatment plant in Spencer, Tennessee threatens the globally significant life forms of a world-class cave and underground stream system beneath Fall Creek Falls State Park. A 2 year battle has been waged since May 2000 between the state and the town of Spencer vs. a coalition of environmental groups over this issue. An alternative discharge method by land application has been identified and only requires an additional $2 million in grant funding to institute. The conflict in this case arose when the Tennessee Water Quality Control Board and the Department of Environment and Conservation issued a permit to Spencer to discharge sewage effluent into Dry Fork Creek, a small intermittent stream that sinks into an underground river leading into Rumbling Falls Cave, a huge cavern under Fall Creek Falls State Park. The environmental community has vigorously objected to polluting this high quality stream and the delicate cave ecosystem where it flows. Complicated legal arguments have been made before the Water Quality Control Board on three separate occasions between May 2000 and December 2001. During those arguments all have agreed that Spencer needs to have a sewage treatment plant system.

photos by Lisa Ventre and Jeff Smith '96 From cancer cell identification and brain morphology to cryptology and Victorian fashion, Wittenberg students and faculty engage in innovative, collaborative research projects every year. For some, the joint effort opens doors to worlds unknown. For others, it confirms the reason they came to Wittenberg. Join them, and journey into their world, a world full of imagination, exploration, creativity and results. Here, Ryan found professors willing to provide direction and assistance. Here, she found professors willing to go beyond mere classroom instruction. Here, she found Dave Mason, professor of biology. She hopes to become a pediatric oncologist some day, something she never dreamed she could do until Wittenberg. Ryan has already been accepted to five schools, including The Ohio State University School of Medicine, The Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine and Loyola University School of Medicine. In the natural sciences alone, one-third of science majors work directly on research projects during their on-campus studies or during internships with regional labs.
