W ILLISTON R EMAINS of birds always have been and always will be the rarest of vertebrate fossils. From the habits of the great majority of species, together with the lightness and buoyancy of their bodies in the water, it is very evident that, even where they are abundant, they will not often fall into such positions that they will be fossilized. Although, with our present evidence, they first made their appearance in geological history as far back as the Jurassic formation, scarcely two score of valid species have thus far been discovered from the Mesozoic, and all of those, with one or two exceptions, are from the Upper Cretaceous formations. The famous Archaeopteryx , from the Jurassic of Solenhofen, the earliest bird known, has long been renowned for its strange mingling of reptilian and avian characters. With the wings imperfectly developed, there were long reptilian fingers with claws, adapted for seizing and grasping. The jaws were provided with well-developed teeth, and the tail was elongated as in reptiles, each individual vertebra provided with a pair of long feathers.

Feeding and watching birds is one of the fastest growing hobbies in the America. Around 60 million people feed birds in the US. The only outdoor hobby that is more popular is gardening and the two are natural partners. Feeding Birds and watching them at feeders is enjoyed by all ages. For birds the benefit is reliable food sources provided by feeders. Many birds depend on feeders to get them through the winter.
All birds need food, water and shelter, but they all have different needs. You are more likely to find certain birds if you look in their normal habitat. You will also have more success in your backyard or garden if you are feeding the birds what they like.
Natural foods that birds eat include insects, worms; berries and other fruit, flower nectar, nuts and seeds, tree sap, buds of trees and shrubs, fish and small animals or other birds, eggs, they even scavenge dead animal.
You can get a clue what a bird eats by the type of beak or bill the bird has.

    PHOBIC BIRDS
by Joanie Doss Phobic birds are a real heartbreak. It is bad enough when you get one from another source but completely devastating when it is a baby that you handraised. Most young phobic birds..........Kodiak showed signs shortly after he was pulled from the nest......start fearing the main caregiver first and most. In working with phobic birds and their owners the hardest part is freeing the owner of the guilt that they caused the bird to be phobic. I believe true phobic birds will be phobic no matter what the person does. There are things to cut back on the severity of the attacks but they are more or less programmed. There is always something that triggers the bird into showing the signs of phobia. One must remember that true phobia is not the result of being slugged, or abused There is a good reason why this bird is afraid of hands, humans, water, etc. Phobia is unrational fear. The first phobic bird I saw was a Grey. The owner had gone on vacation and when she came back, the bird was frightened of all people, especially hands. My friends and I guessed the bird had to be abused or why would a wonderful, friendly bird suddenly turn to be a fearful mess? The bird sitter had a great reputation as a compassionate and caring person. I felt that somehow she had scared the bird, not on purpose, but did something that scared the bird.

Landscape Principles to Attract Birds
Solid design concepts are important in any landscape project, and references on design principles are listed in this fact sheet under the heading of 'Recommended References'. The following are additional considerations to remember when landscaping to attract birds.
  • Provide shelter to entice birds into your yard and to protect them from the elements or predators. Select a variety of plants which offer a consistent supply of food over an extended period of time. Select plants that flower or fruit during the spring migrations and attract insects. Insects, in turn, attract insectivorous birds. In some areas in southern Florida, the flowering gumbo-limbo ( Bursera simaruba ) attracts large numbers of warblers in their spring breeding plumage as they migrate northward. Design plantings which offer enough food to meet the needs of the birds.

Introduction
Birds play an important role because they travel in 3 of the 5 traditional elements: air, earth and water. In mythology, the Celestial Bird adds the element of space to that repertoire and the Phoenix, fire. The Hamsa is a celestial bird that is the vehicle of Indian deities, Brahma and Saraswati . It most often depicted today as a swan sometimes the word is translated by gander [ male goose ] but it is not to be considered an ordinary bird at all. Mythologist Joseph Campbell, entitling one of his books Flight of the Wild Gander , was referring to this bird. Their remarkably expressive voices, variety of form and sometimes spectacular coloration contributes to the prestige and mythological importance of birds. For example, the Kalavinka is a bird of a Buddhist paradise whose voice is described in part 16 of Ashvaghosha's Acts of the Buddha as the most beautiful of all voices so clear and melodious. After becoming popular in 9th-century Japan, a Chinese T'ang dynasty opera featuring the kalvinka became known by that name. It is still being performed today. Four little boys with wings and flowery crowns play little cymbals that are intended to imitate the kalavinka's timbre. Besides mythological birds of the celestial class that include the hamsa , the garuda and the kalavinka, many ordinary kinds of bird, such as

    Caring for Birds
Unfortunately, the brilliant colors, speech capabilities, and intelligence of these animals has made them the third-most popular animal companion in the United States, with an estimated 40 million birds confined to cages in homes across the country.(1) As a result, many birds do not get the mental stimulation or companionship that they need, and normal bird behaviors, such as flock-calling, biting, chewing, and throwing food, are often unwelcome to unprepared human guardians. The result may be abandoned or isolated birds who, as reported in The Washington Post
    Breeding for Profit
In the late 20th century, the popularity of keeping birds as companions resulted in a smuggling business based in Central America. It proved devastating to wild bird populations, and many birds who were caught died during transport or soon after.(3) The Wild Bird Conservation Act stemmed the flow of birds into the U.S. (although it is still a problem in other countries), but breeding operations have perpetuated the myth that baby birds will grow up to become great companions and have also allowed consumer demand to continue.(4) Just as there are puppy mills, there are bird factories, where breeders warehouse hundreds or thousands of nondomesticated birds for their offspring.

Audubon's complete seven volume text. Within the text you will see many names in capital letters. This was the convention that Audubon himself used in his text to set off proper names. We have preserved this convention in our text. Due to the inability of the ASCII character set to print Greek letters, the Greek words that Audubon used in his Family and Genus descriptions have been "Latinized": the letters delta-iota-sigma, for example, have become [dis]; the square brackets indicate that the editors have made this change.
