INFORMATION ABOUT The Department In memoriam The university regrets to announce the death of Dr V.N. (Bob) Iyer, professor emeritus in the Department of Biology. Professor Iyer passed away on December 20, 2007 and is survived by his wife Rajul, his children Nitya and Akhil, their spouses, Rob and Maria, and his grandchildren Priya, Kali, Alex, and Owen. Professor Iyer began his academic career at Carleton University in the 1960s after working with eminent molecular geneticists in the U.S. and then at Canada Agriculture (now Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada). He took retirement in 1995. Professor Iyer did some pioneering work in the area of mechanisms of chemical mutagenesis, bacterial transformation, extrachromosomal genetic elements and their interactions with chromosomes, transposons, DNA replication, plant-bacterial interactions, and genetic modification of plants. He kept up to date with scientific developments not only in his field of research but also in broader areas. He helped formulate guidelines for recombinant DNA research when this field was emerging in Canada. When the news of his passing away came, so many of his former students and associates had almost identical words to say: Bob was a thorough gentleman and scholar. Insightful. An outstanding teacher. A very kind man who was admired by even most volatile people. A stunning and personal loss.

The department offers an undergraduate curriculum designed to provide students with up-to-date training in the biological sciences. The curriculum includes a core of courses in the biological and physical sciences and mathematics. Fields of concentration in the department are ecology and evolution and molecular and cellular biology. The Biology Department participates in several graduate programs, including interdepartmental Ph.D. programs in Cell and Molecular Biology Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology , the Biotechnology BS/MS Degree Program and two Biology Masters Degree Programs . Plan A is a program culminating in a research thesis for students interested in pursuing further advanced degrees or employment in biological research. Plan B is a program leading to a non-thesis Masters Degree, and is intended as the terminal degree for students seeking careers in industry, education, agencies, or other areas. Students may select from three areas in which to concentrate their study: (1) Cell and Molecular Biology, (2) Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology, or (3) General Biology.

Aristotle's Biology
First published Wed Feb 15, 2006; substantive revision Wed Jul 12, 2006 Aristotle is properly recognized as the originator of the scientific study of life. This is true despite the fact that many earlier Greek natural philosophers occasionally speculated on the origins of living things and much of the Hippocratic medical corpus, which was written before or during Aristotle's lifetime, displays a serious interest in human anatomy, physiology and pathology. Even Plato has Timaeus devote a considerable part of his speech to the human body and its functions (and malfunctions). Nevertheless, before Aristotle, only a few of the Hippocratic treatises are both systematic and empirical, and their focus is exclusively on human health and disease. By contrast, Aristotle considered the investigation of living things, and especially animals, central to the theoretical study of nature. Constituting roughly 25% of the extant corpus, his zoological writings provide a theoretical defense of the proper method for biological investigation; and they provide a record of the first systematic and comprehensive study of animals. There was nothing of similar scope and sophistication again until the 16

  • About
  • Welcome to the Division of Biology
Formed in 1967 through the merger of the Departments of Botany, Bacteriology and Zoology, the Division of Biology has developed a proven track record of dedication to both education and research.
There are approximately 700 undergraduate students and 60 graduate students enrolled every year.  Annually, the Division awards nearly $80,000 in scholarships to undergraduates and fully funds each graduate student at a cost of $25,000 per student.
The expertise of the faculty scientists is well-documented by their publication record each year. The faculty publish, or have in press, more than 125 papers in peer-reviewed journals annually. In addition, nearly 20 book chapters and review articles are published by Division faculty annually. Seminar Program
The Division maintains a very active seminar program that is an integral part of its research and education activities. The faculty and students in the Division host over 50 seminars each year, drawing upon the expertise of our national and international colleagues, as well as the expertise of our own faculty and students. According to the American Institute of Biological Sciences: Biologists learn how living things work, how they interact with one another, and how they evolve. They may study cells under a microscope, insects in a rainforest, viruses that affect human beings, plants in a greenhouse, or lions in the African grasslands. Their work increases our understanding about the natural world in which we live and helps us address issues of personal well being and worldwide concern, such as environmental depletion, threats to human health, and maintaining viable and abundant food supplies. Biology at Boston University is a broadly-based department with faculty interested in biological problems at the molecular, organismal, and population levels. Thus we have a rare strength in addressing questions at all organizational levels of Biology and in ways that combine our knowledge in these areas.
The Department has five graduate program areas: Ecology, Behavior and Evolution; Physiology, Endocrinology and Reproduction; Neurobiology; Cell and Molecular Biology; and Marine Biology. Each program area has unique strengths and suggested curricula. The Department offers both master's and doctoral degrees in Biology that emphasize independent research on the part of the student, and a nonresearch master's degree. Many Biology faculty participate in interdepartmental programs that offer graduate degrees in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry Neuroscience , and Bioinformatics.
