Biodiversity is the variety of life: the different plants, animals and micro-organisms, their genes and the ecosystems of which they are a part. Australia is one of the most diverse countries on the planet. It is home to more than one million species of plants and animals, many of which are found nowhere else in the world.

extinction. This fantastic variety of life is found in diverse habitats ranging from the hottest desert to tropical rainforests to the arctic tundra. Biodiversity is essential to every aspect of the way that humans live around the world. Plants and animals provide people with food and medicine, trees play an important role in absorbing greenhouse gases and cleaning the air we breathe, and rivers and watersheds provide the clean water that we drink.
In recognition of the importance of biodiversity, USAID has made biodiversity conservation a key goal under its program to protect the environment. USAID is supporting conservation activities in more than 50 countries, seeking to maintain the variety of species and the habitats in which they occur.

What is Biodiversity?
All living things we know of are part of the Earth's biodiversity, the diversity of life. The concept of biodiversity can be divided up in levels such as:
  • Ecosystems Species Genes (genetic diversity)
It is important to understand that these are all interconnected. As we know, several species are only found in specific areas, or ecosystems. We do not find many rainforest trees in the desert for example. Some species are adapted to specific temperature ranges or need a minimum amount of rainfall every year to survive [ie. rainforests] . Other species may live their whole lives on land except when it is time to mate. Frogs and toads, for example, lay eggs that need water to develop. Species may also be restricted to an environment because of other species, either because of competition that allows the stronger competitor to occupy the space [ ie. mangroves

Biodiversity, or biological diversity, is the variety of life on Earth and the processes and interactions that sustain it. There are three kinds of biodiversity: ecosystem diversity, genetic diversity, and species diversity. Ecosystem or habitat diversity refers to the variety of places where life exists?from rainforests to oceans, from deserts to wetlands. Genetic diversity refers to the variation of genes within species. When most people refer to biodiversity, however, they are talking about species diversity, or the vast complex of species that make up the living world. [more]

Message from Lisbon on Business and Biodiversity Released on More than 400 leaders from business, governments, the EU and NGOs meeting in Lisbon, 12-13 November 2007, have signalled a major shift in thinking on the role of business in biodiversity conservation. A call for evidence on economics of biodiversity loss Released on Today the European Commission launched a six-week-long internet-based call for evidence on the economics of biodiversity loss. Following commitments made at the G8+5 meeting of Environment Ministers in Potsdam in March 2007, the Commission is supporting Germany with the preparatory work for a Review on the Economics of Biodiversity Loss.

Biodiversity in Québec
Among its priorities concerning Québec’s Sustainable Development Plan, the government has implemented on November 25, 2004 its Strategy and Action Plan on Biological Diversity 2004-2007. The Strategy and the Action Plan on Biological Diversity are the outcome of a vast public consultation and an interministerial commitment aimed at promoting the preservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Biological diversity, also referred to as biodiversity, is the term given to all the species and ecosystems that make up Planet Earth as well as the ecological processes of which they are a part. Biological diversity encompasses all that is living, including the variations created by genetic manipulation and selective breeding. This diversity forms the biosphere, that mix of organisms that makes it possible for human beings to exist on our little blue planet. Quebec is one of the biggest regions in North America, covering nearly 1.7 million square kilometres. This territory, which is three times bigger than France, is home to almost 40,000 wild plant and animal species, millions of domestic animals and a whole range of horticultural and agricultural crops. An inventory of Quebec's natural entities includes tundra, taiga, spruce and balsam fir forests, hardwood forests and the St. Lawrence River.

Biodiversity and climate change: Our work
Overview Direct impacts Mitigation impacts Adaptation impacts ... History UNEP-WCMC aims to put authoritative knowledge on biodiversity and climate change at the heart of decision-making, enabling better links between the climate and biodiversity policy worlds. There is an urgent need for accessible information on the likely impacts of climate change on biodiversity. As measures to address climate change and cope with its effects are increasingly deployed, it is also critical to analyse their possible benefits and risks to biodiversity and ecosystem services. UNEP-WCMC works with a wide range of partners, including members of the Cambridge Conservation Forum climate change group. We are now actively developing projects, seeking new partners and looking for support in order to use our resources in the unfolding debate.
