embers of the Biochemistry Department seek to understand the processes of life at the biochemical level. Research in the Department includes studies on the molecular mechanisms and regulation of RNA and DNA synthesis, recombination, oxygen sensing and signaling, mechanisms of nitric oxide action, mechanisms of chaperone-assisted protein folding, protein structure, stress signaling and response, mechanisms of G-protein function, HIV prophylaxis, neuron receptor localization and signaling mechanisms that determine the spatial directions of neuron motility. The Biochemistry Department enjoys a rich intellectual, and supportive physical environment, with ample opportunities for interaction with colleagues with a wide variety of scientific expertise. The New York University School of Medicine maintains a active graduate program through the Sackler Institute of Biomedical Sciences and the MD/PhD Physician/Scientist Training Program Department of Biochemistry

GRADUATE PROGRAM APPLICATIONS

RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT The African trypanosome , Trypanosoma brucei , is the single-celled parasite that causes the devastating diseases African sleeping sickness in man and nagana in cattle. Because of the lack of suitable anti-trypanosomal treatments, these diseases impact the health and nutritional well-being of millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa. Trypanosomiasis causes greater mortality than HIV/AIDS in..... CURRICULUM SPOTLIGHT Our graduate students spend many long hours developing and performing their research projects but the Department usually only gets to hear about their research twice - during a 20 minute 851 presentation and at their final thesis defense. To offer more opportunities for polishing public presentation skills and to allow the graduate faculty a chance to assess progress, we are starting.... ANNOUNCEMENTS -Spring 2008 Term begins Wednesday, January 9th.
-Summer NSF-REU Application deadline is Friday, February 15, 2008.

B iochemistry is the study of the molecular basis of cellular function. It has evolved into the common language for translating the advances of molecular genetics into cellular and chemical terms. Biochemists study a broad range of cellular functions from gene transcription to the structure and function of macromolecules.
The CWRU Biochemistry Department is located in the School of Medicine. The Department offers programs of study leading to the BA, BS, MS, PhD and MD/PhD degrees. The Department is an active center of biochemical research and offers comprehensive and flexible training, due to the broad research experience of its faculty. View our online brochure .
