ELBERT R. JAYCOX CIRCULAR 1125 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Agriculture - Cooperative Extension Service This publication includes information about insecticides, chemicals, drugs, and other materials whose usage is regulated by state and federal agencies. Every effort has been made to provide information that is current and correct as of the date of publication. However, the status of some materials is not clear, and that of others may change at any time. Anyone using regulated materials, or planning to do so, should read and follow the label directions. If there is any question about the use of such materials, contact the extension apiculturist or extension entomologist in your state, or the local extension adviser or county agent. Beekeeping periodicals often include announcements about changes in the accepted uses of regulated materials by beekeepers. So that the information in this publication may be more easily understood, trade names of products or equipment have been used in place of complicated descriptions or chemical identification. No endorsement of named products is intended, nor is criticism implied of similar products that are not mentioned. This circular was reprinted April 1985 with minor revisions by E.E. Killion, Extension Specialist in Apiculture. Elbert R. Jaycox was Professor of Apiculture, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, from 1963 to 1981. Photographs by the author and Killion.

44. Beekeeping With Children
Beginning beekeeping can be an educational, handson activity for young children.
http://www.liberty4hbees.com/
Beekeeping and Children Children can start beekeeping in 4-H officially at age 9. The most important thing to remember is safety. Be sure the children are properly suited up anytime they are working directly with bees. Also caution children to handle dead bees carefully. It sounds strange but a dead bee can "sting." This actually happened to one of our young beekeepers much to his surprise. It is best to have liquid antihistamines at hand just in case of a sting. Be aware of what signs of shock to look for and treat every sting seriously. Vomiting, having to go to the toilet quickly, tingly feelings or fainting are all signs that emergency medical help needs to be called immediately. Now that the scary issues have been addressed, let's think about what children can do with bees. Learn more about 4-H and all its wonderful opportunities:

Small Scale Beekeeping The Beekeeper's Handbook provides a practical summary and guide to the tools and techniques of beekeeping as it is practiced in the industrialized countries. One major problem with the practical literature on beekeeping is that most of it was written for developed countries. It is assumed that such specialty items as prepared comb foundations can be purchased (not made) by the beekeeper. These foundations, fitted into frames, assure that there will be a "beespace" of 5/16 of an inch between frames, which bees will leave as a passageway. Comb foundations are important as they reduce the amount of beeswax required for building comb, enable the beekeeper to control where the comb will be constructed, and are usually made of worker-cell bases, which reduce the number of unwanted drone cells. Home Honey Productio n. This should be of interest in tropical countries where.distance, cost, and high temperatures make it difficult or impossible to get commercially made wax foundation in good condition.

City Farmer founding director, Kerry Banks, wrote an article on beekeeping for our first issue of City Farmer Newspaper in August, 1978, titled "Outlaw Bees Keep City Blooming" In the summer of 1979, Harrowsmith Magazine , impressed by our concept of urban agriculture, produced a whole issue titled "The City Farmers" and asked Kerry to expand his original City Farmer article for them. Below is his 1978/79 report on Vancouver beekeepers. Kerry Banks is an award-winning magazine journalist and sports columnist. He has published five sports trivia books and is also the author of three titles in the Hockey Heroes series: Mats Sundin, Teemu Selanne and Curtis Joseph.

"It shall be unlawful for any person to keep horses, cattle, swine, sheep or goats or to keep any live poultry or fowl including ducks, geese, turkeys, chickens or members of the pigeon family other than registered homing pigeons or to operate any apiary or otherwise keep bees for any purpose in the city." The last few words of Vancouver city bylaw number 4387, section 72, make Bill Chalmers something of a small-time criminal. A gentle graduate student in his early 30s, Chalmers leads, in all-important respects, a law-abiding life. But a man, it seems, is known and made guilty by the company he keeps. Bill Chalmers, one of probably hundreds of illegally practising apiarists in Vancouver, shares his backyard with 70,000 bees.

Domesticating an insect Summary:
Beekeepers domesticate honey bees and use these insects to pollinate agricultural crops. Honey bee hives also yield honey and beeswax. While beekeeping can be a hobby or business, fewer new businesses are starting because of problems with parasites and diseases.. Jack DeAngelis, PhD OSU Ext. Entomologist (ret.) Beekeeping can be either a business or a hobby. Commercial beekeepers employ honey bees to pollinate agricultural crops, often transporting hives long distances between fields or orchards. Honey is also harvested at the end of the season. Hobby beekeepers generally are interested mainly in honey production. Besides pollination and honey, a third valuable product of all this bee labor is beeswax . Beeswax is a complex wax secreted by bees and is used to build the structure of the hive. Beeswax is used by humans to make high quality candles, cosmetics and polish. Beeswax candles burn very cleanly and won't drip or smoke as much as paraffin candles. Beekeepers now face a number of serious pests. A strain of highly aggressive honey bee, the

  • Our country could certainly use some new beekeepers. According to Troy Fore, executive director of the American Beekeeping Federation, there are an estimated 100,000 hobby beekeepers in the United States, down from 200,000 in the 1970s.
Urbanization has played a role in this decline, along with the spread of parasitic mites that have decreased production and increased beekeeping costs.
    Beekeeping Equipment Checklist
    • A veil, bee suit and gloves : Worn properly, protective clothing helps keep stings to a minimum.
    • Smoker : This implement produces a cool smoke that settles the bees by causing them to gorge on honey.
    • Hive tool : A steel tool used to open the hive, scrape wax/propolis and handle frames.
    • Hive stand : This improves air circulation by elevating the hive.

    THE BEEKEEPING PAGE
Welcome to the home page of Michael Mordenti from Lords Valley, PA located 75 miles N.W of NYC . I have been a hobbyist Beekeeper for 9 years (and still learning) I manage 9-11 beehives depending on the time of ( year ) . Hope to add more soon. I produce and pack raw spring and fall wildflower honey, pollen, propolis and beeswax from the wildflowers located here in the Pocono Mts. I also make beeswax candles and pack other products of the hive which are sold locally and given away to family and friends as gifts. For more information on these products feel free to email me at the address on the bottom of this page, or through my guest book. I created this web page to make more people aware of beekeeping, pollination and the benefits of pollen, propolis and raw unprocessed honey, compaired to the highly heated and highly filtered (only to look good honey you see on the supermarket shelves), this kind of treatment filters out some of the nutritional value and most of the pollen out of the honey. A QUOTE "the secret of my health is applying honey on the inside and oil outside."

Our beekeeping interest began when we saw James D. Satterfield's web site on Top Bar Hive Beekeeping . For our first project, Dustin and I designed and built our own top bar hive W e then joined the Montgomery County Beekeeper's Association for some experienced advice on both our hive's design and beekeeping in general. From there, we have progressed to building all sorts of hives including:
