Bees in San Francisco? Mark Twain once said the coldest winter he ever had was a summer in San Francisco. He may have been right but this does not mean it is bad for the bees.
The San Francisco Bay Area offers it's own unique climates to both challenge and reward the beekeeper. You may experience a foggy cool summer in San Francisco at your bee yard and have drought conditions in the East Bay hills.
Most books you will read will talk about the winter months of inactivity, but here in the Bay Area we experience mild weather year round. The warmest part of the year in San Francisco is usually September through Novemeber, a time when the rest of the country may be experiencing its first snow fall. In this section we will chronicle the unique challenges to the Bay Area beekeeper.
Community Education
The San Francisco Beekeepers Association is dedicated to educating communities about honeybees and the historic art of beekeeping. We have a number of volunteers who visit schools and other interested groups. Typically, our visits include a demonstration hive with live bees, posters, beekeeping equipments, and, of course, honey tasting.
We ask that a $40 donation per visit.

Animals Animals or Earth Scenes Beekeeping, also apiculture, management of colonies of bees for the production of honey and other hive products and for the pollination of crops. Beekeeping usually refers to the husbandry of the European honey bee, but it may also refer to management of other species of social bees, such as the Indian honey bee, the dwarf honey bee, or stingless bees. Groups of hives are called apiaries, and a beekeeper may also be called an apiarist or apiculturist. An ancient and widespread profession, beekeeping is believed to have originated in the Middle East. The early Egyptians kept bees and traded for honey and beeswax along the East African coast several thousand years ago. Until 1851, beekeepers harvested honey and beeswax by killing the colonies inhabiting the hives. In that year the American apiarist Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth discovered the principle of "bee space": Bees leave spaces of about 0.6 cm (about 0.23 in) between wax combs. In artificial hives, if this space is left between adjacent comb frames and between the end frames and the walls of the hive, each comb will remain unattached to neighboring combs. Langstroth's discovery made it possible to remove individual frames from a beehive and to harvest honey and wax without destroying the colony. It also became possible to control disease and to maintain a larger number of colonies.

Farm Bill Being Finalized
  • Time to contact your Congressmen
  • A Conference Committee will soon begin to reconcile the House version of the Farm Bill with the Senate version of the Farm Bill. There are several provisions in the two bills affecting beekeepers. ABF Vice President David Mendes encourages all beekeepers to contact their Congressmen and tell them how important these provisions are:
  • Expanded Beekeeping Research. We need answers to CCD and the other problems we are facing. Of the two bills, the House bill is more favorable to beekeepers. Disaster Relief. Section 12102 of the Senate bill would provide for supplemental agricultural disaster assistance to honey producers and others. Conservation Programs.

    A guide to beekeeping.
    Beekeeping guide
    Basic Bee Information
The key to getting into beekeeping is understanding the bees. There are three types of bees found in a bee colony, and each has their own specific role to fulfil. The most abundant type of bee in each colony is the Worker bee . This is a female bee that is incapable of reproduction and has tasks both inside the hive and out. These tasks include 'housekeeping' which takes place for the first two weeks of a workers' life. Housekeeping involves repairing damaged sections of the hive, clearing away bee carcasses, and feeding the queen with royal jelly which only bees of less than ten days old can make because they have a special secretion from their mandibles at that age. After two weeks, worker bees can fly and so are sent out to collect nectar and pollen. After another two weeks of collecting worker bees are put on guard duty, protecting the entrance to the hive from intruders Drone bees are males whose only job is to breed with the queen. They are only allowed in the hive if they will mate with the queen, and then they are sent out. No drones live permanently in a bee colony and workers keep them out of the hives in the autumn so they die each winter. Drones do not have the necessary tools to collect pollen or nectar and are therefore useless apart from their breeding capabilities. The queen is the most important bee in the colony and is very different from both other types found in a hive. The queen's job is to breed with the drones and lay eggs. It may not be much of a job, but it is through her that the colony can continue year after year. The queen lays enough eggs to keep the hive in workers for the spring and summer and also knows when to begin laying eggs again in the winter. There is only one queen per colony of bees and when she dies the worker bees will choose new worker larvae to replace her. In order for the worker larva to develop into a queen, they must be fed a special substance called '

    http://www.highyieldrecruiting.com/beekeeping/
    The History of Beekeeping
The art of beekeeping has been around for a long time, but no one really knows when the first time someone thought about collecting the honey from hives was. We do know that Archaeologist have discovered cave drawings depicting collecting honey. These caves were found in Africa and Spain's eastern regions. Archaeologist believe that the cave drawings were created in 7000BC. Most of these pictures show people scooping honey out of rocks and trees but a few of them depict images of humans standing, unstung, in the midst of a swarms of bees. Scientist believe that these early cave dwellers somehow learned that smoke had an interesting affect on bees.
The earliest artificial bee hives were made out of pottery, clay vases, and straw baskets which resembled the trees and rock crevices that the bees were drawn to in nature. Early beekeepers learned how to capture swarms of bees in these containers. Once trapped the bees proceeded to turn the containers into a bee hive.
Beekeeping began early in the Americas too. There is evidence that many ancient civilizations, such as the Myans, raised bees and collected their honey.
Aficionados of Roman history know that bees and honey played a role in the Roman culture. The Goddess Mellona, was the protector of the bees.

In Romania, beekeeping began very early, the conditions for keeping bees being favorable. According to the historical sources, the Thracians and the Dacians, the ancestors of the romanian people, kept bees and obtained honey and wax. The petrified honeycombs and the works of antiquity historians like Herodotus, Xenofon or Virgilius are proving that beekeeping was an important occupation on the actual territory of Romania in that times. In 425 BC Herodotus wrote that the territory from accros Danube (Istros or Istru or Hister or Danaistru) is occupied by bees and because of them one cannot go farther. what is it?
The art and craft of keeping the honey bee Apis mellifera
The art of beekeeping brings together people interested in improving agriculture, local economies, gardening, education, food and cooking, ancient craft skills and science.
what are the benefits? 80% of fruit tree pollination is by bees; they can also improve crop production and can travel up to 3 miles from the hive. Also, bee products can provide local, natural alternatives to many environmentally-damaging synthetic products.
Bees can provide all the sugar we need, in the form of honey, without the need for costly and polluting transport and refining. Honey can be used as a sugar substitute in all cooking, including jam-making and brewing (wine or mead). Honey is a healthier option than refined sugar and beekeeping is said to be one of the healthiest professions.
Apitherapy is the use of bee products to treat ailments, boost the immune system and promote healthy tissue growth. Honey is also said to relieve stomach troubles and is a disinfectant in wound cleaning and healing. And of course hot honey and lemon is the sensible thing to take if you have cold symptoms. Apitherapy is just one of the natural ways to reduce our reliance on the pharmaceutical industry.
