Bats Power Play Makes It Five in a Row
(Corpus Christi, TX) - The Bats and Rayz have played six games this year, splitting them with three wins for each team. Five of the games have been decided by one goal, three went to a shootout. Throw in the fact that the Bats are chasing Corpus Christi in the Southeast Division and for the final playoff spot in the Southern Conference, and you have a classic scenario of a rivalry game with playoff implications. That's what took place Tuesday night when the Bats traveled to the American Bank Center in Corpus. The Bats... Read the whole article

Emmons Western civilization has generally regarded bats with superstition, fear, and uncertainty. Too often, popular misconceptions have labeled them as "dirty," "disease carriers," or "blood suckers," an unenviable reputation to be sure. Only in China, expressed in art and handicrafts, has the bat achieved respectability as a symbol of happiness and good luck. This document attempts to dispel the fears and answer some of the questions most often asked of the National Museum of Natural History by presenting some general facts about the biology and natural history of these shy, nocturnal creatures. What are they?

Bats
Bats, like snakes, are poorly understood. As a result, these tiny winged mammals are feared by many. Much lore surrounding bats has been generated by tropical vampire bats which feed on the blood of livestock, wildlife, and occasionally sleeping humans. Of course, bats are a public health concern because they can carry rabies. But species found in Minnesota are very small, weighing from two-tenths of an ounce to slightly over one ounce. Insectivorous, they feed mostly on flying insects, including beetles, moths, and mosquitoes which they catch in their cupped tail membranes as they dart and weave through the nighttime air. Once an insect is caught, the bat transfers its prey to its mouth while in flight. Bats locate insects and dodge obstacles by echo-location. As they fly, they constantly emit supersonic cries. Their ears pick up echoes bouncing off objects. These echoes either guide bats toward prey or away from obstacles. Discovery of this unique principle led to development of sonar and radar by which boats and planes navigate, and fishermen locate schools of fish. The little brown myotis , our most common bat species, occurs over most of North America. Together with the

Bats and More Bats!
California Leaf-nosed Bat
Colossal Cave Mountain Park serves as home or way station to almost half the bat species found in the state of Arizona, including some rare and threatened ones. The females of two of the species winter in hibernation in nearby cooler caverns and crevices, usually at higher elevations. In the spring they move to lower elevations to bear their young in "maternity colonies." These may be in buildings, mine tunnels, or caverns like Colossal Cave.
The two species are:
  • Townsend's Big-eared Bat which is listed as threatened in Arizona; and
  • the Cave Myotis.
Both species are insect feeders. Townsend's

One other species bears its young in Colossal Cave (and is also likely to have maternity roosts in warmer places, such as buildings or holes in saguaro cactus). This species, too, is an insect feeder:

Three bat species use Colossal Cave, not as a nursery, but as a summer home or a stopover point in their migrations:

Bats Creatures of the Night
Bats are mammals
Like most mammals, including people, bats have fur, grow up inside their moms, are born live, and nurse milk from their mothers' bodies. Bats belong to a special group of flying mammals called Chiroptera (Ki-ROP-ter-a). This word is Greek for "hand-wing." Bats actually fly with a modified hand.
Batsthe truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth
Many people still fear and dislike these winged mammals of the night. Several hundred years ago in Europe, bats were considered evil, dirty, and mysterious. These feelings were passed on through legends. Today we know that the many myths surrounding bats are false. But, because of these myths, some people still harm bats. In fact, because of human actions, many species have become endangered. Bats play a valuable role in the ecosystem. Worldwide, bats are the most important natural enemies of night-flying insects. In the tropics, bats pollinate flowers and disperse seeds.
The Mega and the Micro
Bats are divided into two main groups, the mega-chiroptera and the micro-chiroptera. The mega-bats, about 150 species, are called fruit bats because many of them eat fruit, nectar, and pollen. They are also called flying foxes because they have big eyes for finding food and they have a face that looks somewhat like a fox.

BATS Back to "The Wonderful World of Bats" JoAnn vonLubken and Linda Drew May Street School Hood River Co. School District OVERVIEW OF BAT INFORMATION: WHAT ARE BATS? Bats are members of a class of animals called mammals. They have hair and mother bats feed their pups with milk produced in their mammary glands. Bats differ from all other mammals in one most interesting way; they have wings and can fly. The scientific name, Chiroptera, means hand-wing. HOW DO BATS FLY? Bats fly by flapping their wings. The wings are moved by strong muscles in the back, chest, and shoulders. During the wing stroke, the part of the wing between the body and the fifth finger pushes downward against the air, providing lift. Lift is the force that keeps the bat aloft. The part of the wing between the second and the fifth fingers pushes backward against the air, providing thrust. Thrust is what keeps the bat moving forward. HOW MANY SPECIES OF BATS ARE THERE? There are roughly 850 species of bats. The order Chiroptera has two suborders, megabats and microbats. The majority of megabats belong to a group known as flying foxes. Their faces resemble the faces of foxes or dogs, with large eyes, simple ears, and simple noses. Microbats have small eyes, large ears, and complexly shaped noses.

This study of plankton diversity at the Bernuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) site is part of an initiative to create an online atlas of marine diversity, the Ocean Biogeographic Information System ( OBIS ), a database of global marine animal and plant distributions. Planktonic communities comprise a wide diversity of organisms that form the basis of marine food webs. The zooplankton and micronekton provide a direct link between primary producers and higher trophic levels such as fishes, seabirds, and some marine mammals. Zooplankton contain representatives of nearly every animal group. There are two important reasons for a census of the diversity and abundance of the plankton. The first is the need to describe and understand patterns of distribution and abundance of organisms and to predict the impact of environmental change on those patterns. Second, to better understand their qualitative and quantitative role in the pelagic food web and the cycling of elements in the sea. We are developing a multi-species inventory of zooplankton and micronekton at the Bermuda Atlantic Time-Series Study (BATS) station, a 13-year, ongoing oceanographic time series situated in the western North Atlantic subtropical gyre, or

The Mammals of Texas - Online Edition ORDER CHIROPTERA: BATS Chiroptera, "hand wing," alludes to the great elongation of the fingers that support the flying membrane. Among mammals, bats are unique in that they have true powers of flight; other mammals, such as flying squirrels, volplane or glide, always from a higher to a lower elevation. Bats as a group are crepuscular or nocturnal; their eyes are small and inefficient, but their ears are usually well developed. Experiments suggest that the middle and inner ear and high-frequency vocals are highly important in guiding bats in flight and in their aerial feeding activities. Some bats hibernate in winter; others migrate seasonally. Bats are nearly worldwide in distribution. The tropical regions are best suited for them, and there the greatest variety is found. The temperate regions are inhabited by fewer species; no bats have been recorded in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Thirty-two species of bats occur in Texas. In addition to the 32 species of bats living in Texas today, four others are known from fossil skeletal remains. One of these
