66. What Is Astrophysics?
Brief and Straightforward Guide What is astrophysics?
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-astrophysics.htm
What is Astrophysics?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Astrophysics is a branch of astronomy that analyzes the properties and interactions of cosmological objects based on known physical law. The term is slightly misleading, as anyone who goes into astronomy nowadays must be proficient in physics . It can be said that the field of astrophysics is very similar to the fields of astronomy and cosmology Astrophysics can be broken down into observational and theoretical astrophysics. There is no such thing as experimental astrophysics because the scales and objects being observed are far too large or far away to experiment on with modern technology. Because light takes time to travel to us on Earth, the most distant regions of the universe are actually windows into the ancient universe, when the universe was far denser and more energetic. Because astrophysics sometimes deals with theories of the early, compact universe, it can overlap strongly with particle physics , which provides predictions of how matter would behave in the ancient universe. Astrophysicists are known for studying such phenomena as black holes , galaxies, superclusters, neutron stars, quasars, the Big Bang

The vacuum of space is something of a misnomer, because gas and dust pervade the space between the stars. In many places, this gas is visible through the light it radiates or by the light it blocks, but more often it is as invisible to our eyes as the air we breath. It plays the nuisance role of blocking starlight, hiding much of the Galaxy from view. It provides a medium for the propagation of sound waves, particularly supernova shock waves. It can also look pretty, like neon lights, when bright stars shine their light onto it. The interstellar medium is quite substantial, for it accounts for almost one-third of the mass in the Galactic plane, and it is the material from which new stars are made. It is symbiotic with the stars. Stars heat the interstellar gas and dust, governing the rate at which new stars are born, and they alter the composition of the interstellar gas, modifying the chemical composition of the next generation of stars. This first issue for the year of this web site introduces two pages on the interstellar medium. The first page is a brief introduction to the characteristics of the interstellar medium. The second page describes why one sees cool, dense clouds floating in a warm, tenuous gas in the Galactic disk. Pages to be added in the coming weeks on the interstellar medium will lay the foundation for discussing star formation.

High Energy Astrophysics Division (HEAD) assists and promotes the advancement of research and the dissemination of knowledge about high energy events, particles, quanta, relativistic gravitational fields, and related phenomena in the astrophysical universe. HEAD also promotes the coordination of this research and knowledge with other branches of science. The division holds Division Meetings each 12-24 months, as well as sessions within the meetings of the American Astronomical Society . Each year, HEAD awards the Rossi Prize for recent original research in High Energy Astrophysics. Approximately every 18 months, HEAD also sponsors the Schramm Award for High Energy Astrophysics Science Journalism which is awarded at the HEAD Division Meetings. The electronic HEAD Newsletter is published twice yearly. HEAD membership information is managed within the AAS database at AAS Member Directory
Items of Current Interest:
  • Three new members were elected to the HEAD Executive Committee. Cole Miller, Vicky Kalogera, and Ron Remillard were elected to two-year terms as members of the HEAD Executive Committee. Congratulations to all three! And thanks to retiring members Rita Sambruna, Bryan Gaensler and Tod Strohmayer. At the HEAD Business meeting during the January AAS meeting in Seattle, the Chair, Steve Murray, announced that the 2007 Bruno Rossi Prize is being awarded to Neil Gehrels and the Swift Team for for major advances in the scientific understanding of gamma-ray bursts. These include groundbreaking observations of the location of short gamma-ray bursts, and the discovery of enormously bright X-ray flares in the early afterglows.
