Astrophysics is the branch of astronomy that deals with the physics of the universe , including the physical properties ( luminosity density temperature , and chemical composition) of celestial objects such as stars galaxies , and the interstellar medium , as well as their interactions. The study of cosmology is theoretical astrophysics at the largest scales where Albert Einstein 's general theory of relativity plays a major role. Because astrophysics is a very broad subject

The SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS) is a Digital Library portal for researchers in Astronomy and Physics, operated by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) under a NASA grant. The ADS maintains three bibliographic databases containing more than 6.0 million records: Astronomy and Astrophysics, Physics, and arXiv e-prints. The main body of data in the ADS consists of bibliographic records, which are searchable through highly customizable query forms , and full-text scans of much of the astronomical literature which can be browsed or searched via our full-text search interface. Integrated in its databases, the ADS provides access and pointers to a wealth of external resources, including electronic articles, data catalogs and archives. We currently have links to over 6.4 million records maintained by our collaborators.

Astrophysics on astrophysical.org
Astrophysics
is the branch of astronomy that deals with the physical properties of stars , galaxies, and other astronomical objects. Among such characteristics are: temperature, luminosity, color, density and chemical composition of stars.
Cosmology is theoretical astrophysics at its largest scale, involving the structure of the whole universe. Astrophysical research is important for physics at atomic and subatomic scales. Most of modern astronomical research involves a substantial amount of physics and can be considered astrophysics. However, astronomy is considered to be separated into 3 traditional branches: astrometry and celestial mechanics are the classical fields of astronomy; astrophysics is the modern field. The current high status of astrophysics is reflected in the naming of institutions involved in astronomical research: the oldest ones are "astronomy" departments or institutes, the newest ones include "astrophysics" in their names, often excluding the word "astronomy". Astrometry and celestial mechanics are so related that they may be considered a single branch: for this reason, the Scientia websites are only two

The Department of Astrophysics is located in the Rose Center for Earth and Space on the grounds of the American Museum of Natural History. The newest academic research department in the Museum, the department was formed to support the astronomy education activities of the Museum and to conduct research into astronomy and astrophysics. Additionally, the department provides scientific support for the exhibits of the Rose Center and Hayden Planetarium.
AMNH Research Spotlight - Planetary Nebulae Central Stars
Spotlight archive Planetary Nebula Mz3 click on the above image to view the full image. Sometimes stars are surrounded by beautiful gaseous nebulae. These can often be seen even with smaller telescopes and have become a favorite of amateur astronomers. Today, we believe that planetary nebulae are the ejected outer layers of aging middle-weight stars and that our Sun will, in about four and a half billion years, eject its own planetary nebula. Planetary nebulae come in many shapes but most of them are not spherical. Many theories try and explain why a spherical star might blow a non-spherical nebula. One of these theories says that a companion orbiting the aging star helped shape the nebula. Companions to the central stars of planetary nebulae, however, are relatively rare.

ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS
Research Activities
Research in the astrophysics group includes astrobiology and the chemistry of the interstellar medium, as well as many areas of galactic and extragalactic astronomy. Research in astrobiology and interstellar chemistry describes the evolution of interstellar clouds into new solar systems . Current interest focuses on spectroscopic detection of organic molecules in interstellar dust and gas, and their contribution to the organic inventory of protoplanetary disks. Theoretical projects include simulations of protostellar collapse, multifluid magnetohydrodynamic shock waves, and shock chemistry. Research in galactic and extragalactic astronomy includes the structure and formation of the galactic halo, metallicity gradients in the galactic thick disk, properties of stars with strong Balmer absorption, optical properties of quasars, and astronomical data mining. The astrophysics group makes use of ground-based telescopes located at world class observing sites in Hawaii, Australia, Chile, and South Africa. We also have access to data from major satellite facilities, including the Hubble Space Telescope, Chandra, and the Infrared Space Observatory; and large ground-based astronomy projects, including the

Cracks on Enceladus Open and Close under Saturn's Pull
Cracks in the icy surface of Saturn's moon Enceladus open and close daily under the pull of Saturn's gravity, according to new calculations by NASA-sponsored researchers. In 2005, the Cassini spacecraft flew by Enceladus and saw plumes of material erupting from the south pole of Enceladus. Scientists were surprised to see this because eruptions are powered by heat from an object's interior. Enceladus is tiny compared to most moons, only about 500 kilometers (310 miles) in diameter, so it should have lost its interior heat to the cold of space long ago.
