Touchdown! Discovery made a picture-perfect landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California at 8:11 a.m. EDT on August 9, 2005.
Five of the seven Return to Flight crew members spoke to reporters during a press conference from Edwards Air Force Base in California. The two missing astronauts - Andy Thomas and Wendy Lawrence - were delayed due to late-running, post-flight medical tests. Commander Eileen Collins opened the briefing speaking of the team's excitement over coming home. "It's absolutely fantastic being back here on planet Earth," said Collins.

http://www.astro.umd.edu/
The Department of Astronomy has the mission of achieving excellence in research, teaching, outreach and service in the areas of astronomy and astrophysics. We maintain internationally recognized theoretical, observational, and computational programs that cover the entire electromagnetic spectrum from radio waves to gamma rays and address fundamental questions on all scales from our solar system to the entire cosmos.
While we view astronomical research as the preeminent part of our mission, the other components are of great importance to us. Both our graduate and undergraduate curricula are continuously revised and updated, and our Observatory Open Houses have been enjoyed by the public for over 30 years.

Nicholas Cage Todd Gross
Above is actor Nicholas Cage, who plays a fictitious movie weatherman. In the upcoming movie The Weatherman starring Nick Cage, a weatherman that appears to be a non-meteorologist works two hours a day and seems to more or less "wing it' from what I have seen of the trailers. In real life, hundreds of hard-working meteorologists are struggling with pages and pages of data to give you the BEST possible forecast and beat out the competition. Those that are really "into it" usually come out on top. Such a real weatherman is Boston TV Meteorologist Todd Gross. Todd was depicted by actor Christopher McDonald in the movie The Perfect Storm, and that character is much more true to life of today's true-blue TV Meteorologists than what this movie appears to portray. Todd has written a short book on becoming a TV meteorologist, check it out.

Astronomy is Looking Up
I wish I could fly. I wish I could fly. I wish I could fly. Over two decades later, I continue to feel the same way whenever I look up at the night sky. I still hold the four stars in the bowl of the Big Dipper with affection, although my favorites now include Betelgeuse and Antares, very bright stars in Orion and Scorpio. And through the years, although my active participation in astronomical observation has waxed and waned, my fascination with astronomy never diminished.
