    Gary's Astronomy Homework Help
    Main Index Page
By Gary Agranat This is what remains of my astronomy tutoring website. I maintained it between 1997 and about 2004. Some pages were completely revised in late 2006. But I no longer keep the website up to date.
This website was originally created to function like a specialized library index for students researching astronomy topics. Back in 1997 I was very disappointed with the quality of many astronomy websites that were coming out. I also was disappointed that many students seemed to settle for low quality presentations. I could see for myself that, if one knew enough about what to look for, some very useful and interesting information at the frontier of the field could be found. I also could see that most professional scientists didn't have the time to develop good index websites themselves. And so I created this website. I was particularly keen to link to discussions by researchers in the field about their work.
There are some pages which I still would like to rewrite. Also, some of the older pages still have many links which are out of date. When I can give the time, I'll gradually take care of those pages.
At heart, all acts of education are a sharing of experience. The development of

    High School Students Discover Asteroid
Here’s another wonderful example of how amateur astronomers can make important discoveries. Three high school students from Wisconsin discovered an asteroid while doing an astronomical observation project for a class in school. Connor Leipold, Tim Patika, and Kyle Simpson of The Prairie School near Racine were notified this week by the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts that the object they discovered has been verified as an asteroid. The students will have the opportunity to name the asteroid, temporarily designated as 2008 AZ28. They spotted the asteroid through telescopes located in New Mexico that operate remotely via the internet. The technology was provided through a project sponsored by Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. As Fraser and Pamela commented on their Astronomy Cast episode about amateur astronomy,

The Department of Astronomy has the mission of achieving excellence in research, teaching, outreach and service in the areas of astronomy and astrophysics. We maintain internationally recognized theoretical, observational, and computational programs that cover the entire electromagnetic spectrum from radio waves to gamma rays and address fundamental questions on all scales from our solar system to the entire cosmos.
While we view astronomical research as the preeminent part of our mission, the other components are of great importance to us. Both our graduate and undergraduate curricula are continuously revised and updated, and our Observatory Open Houses have been enjoyed by the public for over 30 years.
