MESSENGER meets the messenger
Posted by Brenda on January 23rd, 2008 On January 14, 2008, MESSENGER from Earth met the messenger to the gods, Mercury. We have not seen new close up views of the tiny planet for over 30 years, and new images reveal vast amounts of information about the geology of the celestial neighbor. Not since the 70s, when Mariner 10 gave us a view of Mercury, have scientists been so excited about new discoveries of the tiny world.

Blue Moon of a different kind
Posted by Brenda on January 20th, 2008 Recent tradition stipulates that a Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a month. Those Moons are not really the colour blue, but a real blue Moon can be seen if the atmospheric conditions are right. One of the conditions to provide views of a real blue-coloured Moon is for the atmosphere to have large amounts of ash-sized pollutants floating in it to scatter light.

Easier - Astronomy is the study of things found in space such as the sun, planets, moons, and stars. Harder - Astronomy, one of the oldest sciences, is the study of celestial bodies such as planets, stars, and other objects in space. Astronomers locate objects in the daytime or nighttime skies and measure their magnitudes and motions, searching to find what they are made of and how they create their light. Astronomy for Kids

08/09/07: BRIGHT GALAXIES HIDDEN IN DISTANT UNIVERSE UNVEILDED, UMASS ASTRONOMERS REPORT
Amherst, Mass. - A By combining the capabilities of several telescopes, teams of scientists, including University of Massachusetts Amherst astronomers, have spotted extremely bright galaxies hiding in the distant, young universe. They are the most luminous and prolific galaxies seen at that great distance, churning out stars at a rate 1,000 times greater than that of the Milky Way. Click Here

11/24/06: SCIENTISTS FLICK SWITCH OF GIANT TELESCOPE
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Scientists turned on a massive telescope built on one of Mexico's tallest mountains on Wednesday, hoping to get a glimpse of the beginning of the universe. With a base like a launching pad and an antenna the size of a big Ferris wheel, the Large Millimeter Telescope or LMT, will be used to pick up electromagnetic radiation known as millimeter waves emitted 13 billion years ago, when the first stars burst into existence, astrophysicists say. AMHERST, Mass. - New clues about the origins of cosmic rays, mysterious high-energy particles that bombard the Earth, have been revealed using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. An extraordinarily detailed image of the remains of an exploded star provides crucial insight into the generation of cosmic rays.

Austin, TX An experiment to determine the nature of "dark energy," that mysterious force that's causing the universe's expansion to speed up, is driving telescope upgrades and the creation of new instruments at McDonald Observatory in West Texas. The exciting science results already obtained from this project demonstrate the power of the researchers' approach. University of Texas at Austin astronomers Karl Gebhardt and Gary Hill will detail the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) at a news conference at the 211th meeting of the American Astronomical Society today. more..

    Priyamvada Natarajan
The presence of mass concentrations like massive galaxies or clusters causes light rays traveling from background sources (often galaxies or quasars) to be deflected, not unlike the bending effects caused by an optical lens. The amount of deflection produced is directly proportional to the `strength' of the lens, which is the mass in this case, as well as to the relative orientations of the lens and the object emitting the light. This HST image of the lensing cluster Abell 2218 (courtesy Kneib et al. 1996) at a redshift of 0.175 illustrates the dramatic `strong' lensing effects: arcs - the highly distorted structures that can be picked up by eye. Using the shapes of all the distorted background galaxies a high resolution mass map of this cluster has been constructed. Gravitational lensing provides incontrovertible evidence for the presence of copious amounts of dark matter in clusters of galaxies like this one. More January 29, 2008 - 2:00 pm
