Are There Other Inhabited Worlds? The only life that we know about in the universe is life on our own planet Earth. We have no idea of how representative it might be of life on other planets, although in the chapter by one of us (JCF) it is conjectured that, given suitable environmental conditions, if life started somewhere else it would be constrained to take an evolutionary pathway to eukaryogenesis and multicellularity (Chela-Flores 1998; Seckbach et al.

Habitable Planets
Spectroscopy: Determining a Star's Type
Habitable Zone: Determining a Planet's Distance from its Star
Drawing on the interactive activities of Astro Venture in which students in grades 5-8 role play NASA occupations as they search for and build a planet that would be habitable to humans. This event looked at the need for liquid water and how star type and the planet's orbital distance are two interrelated requirements for the presence of water. The event also looked at methods that scientists use to determine a star's type and the orbital distance of a planet orbiting a star. Astrophysicist Yvonne Pendelton and NASA Project Scientist Michael Kaufman were on hand to answer questions.

http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/hqlibrary/pathfinders/astro.htm
Astrobiology Revised: May 2006 Contents Internet Resources Articles and Reports Books, Magazines, and Videos NASA defines astrobiology as, "the study of the origin, evolution, distribution and destiny of life in the universe." ( NASA Astrobiology Roadmap . Final Version, September 2003.) This bibliography explores the theories, principles, and techniques of the emerging field of astrobiology. Also included is information about NASA missions which relate to the "study of life in the universe" and some recent research findings. This guide is intended to be used as an authoritative source of information on the topic of astrobiology for employees of NASA Headquarters. As such, the domain of this guide is limited to resources readily available to this user group. “Readily available” is defined as materials held in the collection at NASA Headquarters Library and materials available in full-text format either over the Internet or through NASA Headquarter’s institutional subscriptions. C319 Physics-Astronomy Building Astrobiology the study of life in the universe investigates the wide range of multidisciplinary factors that may influence the origin and evolution of life on Earth and beyond. This investigation demands an intense interdisciplinarity, and the Astrobiology Program at the University of Washington is creating a new community of scholars, investigators, and educators. This community is skilled in multidisciplinary methods and thinking and pushes the boundaries beyond the commonplace with intellectual vigor, creativity, and rigorous method. Astrobiology at the University of Washington builds on the strengths of traditional academic structure to transcend the limits of specialization through the synergy of multidisciplinary cooperation in both research and education. The internationally recognized graduate certificate program offers a rigorous, interdisciplinary curriculum in cooperation with the Ph.D. programs of the participating departments. The program's unique features that bond students and faculty from widely disparate departments. Participating graduate students gain the personal and professional skills necessary to successfully engage in multidisciplinary collaborations. The emerging field of astrobiology benefits from and is shaped by the perspectives of multiple disciplines directed at a common problem. So, too, does the astrobiology community of scholars and researchers at the University of Washington benefit from the breadth of perspective offered by diversity in culture and race among the program's participants.

WHAT IS ASTROBIOLOGY? Astrobiology is the scientific discipline which studies the response of all living things to the rhythmic and periodic fluctuations of the Geomagnetic Field of the Earth(EGF) and the Interplanetary Magnetic Field(IMF) of the Solar System. WHAT IS THE BLOCK INSTITUTE FOR ASTROBIOLOGICAL STUDIES? The Block Institute for Astrobiological Studies is a Texas Non-Profit Corporation (filing number 800150772) and publicly supported organization as described in sections 503 (c) and 509 (a)(1) and 170 (b)(1)(A)(vi) of the Federal Internal Revenue Code whose purpose is to further research in Astrobiology and to be a place for learning and education in pursuit of knowledge concerning Astrobiology. Central to the research efforts is gaining a clear understanding of the evolution and expression of the processes involved in the complex interaction of organic life with the rhythmic and periodic fluctuations of the gravitometric/electromagnetic spectrum of energy dissipation from the Earth, Sol and the Universe. Research at the Block Institute for Astrobiological Studies(BIAS) is focused upon the means that living systems have developed to respond to these fluctuations and the various responses to the fluctuations.
