Home About IJCAI IJCAI-07 IJCAI-07 Proceedings IJCAI-05 Proceedings ... A. I. Journal IJCAI is the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, the main international gathering of researchers in AI. Held biennially in odd-numbered years since 1969, IJCAI is sponsored jointly by IJCAI and the national AI societie (s) of the host nation(s). IJCAI-09 will be held in Pasadena, California, USA, from 11th July through 17th July 2009 . We look forward to seeing you there. Sad News The IJCAI Board of Trustees and the global AI community are saddened by the untimely death of Prof. Donald Michie on July 7, 2007. Prof. Michie was an AI pioneer and for his sustained contributions to AI he received IJCAI's highest Distinction, its Award for Research Excellence in 2001. Our heartfelt condolences to his family, his friends, and his worldwide AI colleagues.
We all will miss him dearly. Please see his homepage for his contributions to AI and other scientific disciplines and for the numerous awards he received honoring his work.

Welcome to the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory
The Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel , or short VUB AI-Lab, was founded in 1983 by Luc Steels and is part of the Computer Science Department Over the years, more than hundred researchers have worked at the laboratory. They have built a large number of artificial systems to investigate aspects of intelligence: knowledge systems, autonomous robots, machine learning systems, natural language processing components, design and implementation tools. See our publications
The robotic fish built at the AI-Lab (1992) Currently, the laboratory focuses on two research themes: origins of language and robotic agents . Members of the laboratory teach introductory and advanced courses in artificial intelligence and autonomous systems.

Thoughts on Artificial Intelligence
  • Introduction Why the current approach of AI is wrong
  • Reference Points The Role of the Body ... See also ...
  • These are my own ideas on the topic, based on the article Subcognition and the Limits of the Turing Test by Robert M. French. AI is not my field of study, and the article was written almost 10 years ago (when I was still a student).)
    1. Introduction
Although there is no clear definition of AI (not even of intelligence), it can be described as the attempt to build machines that think and act like humans, that are able to learn and to use their knowledge to solve problems on their own. A 'by-product' of the intensive studies of the human brain by AI researchers is a far better understanding of how it works. The human brain consists of 10 to 100 billion neurons, each of which is connected to between 10 and 10,000 others through synapses. The single brain cell is comparatively slow (compared to a microprocessor) and has a very simple function: building the sum of its inputs and issuing an output, if that sum exceeds a certain value. Through its highly parallel way of operation, however, the human brain achieves a performance that has not been reached by computers yet; and even at the current speed of development in that field, we still have about twenty years until the first supercomputers will be of equal power.

English Information about The Japanese Society for AI
Though almost all the content on this site is written in Japanese, the following information will be useful for English speakers:
Transactions o6f the JSAI (online since 2001):
From 2001, JSAI separated the publication of technical papers into its "Transactions of the JSAI". These transactions are available for online access (papers are placed on the web once they are accepted), and also released as hardcopy once per year. Some of the papers in the Transactions are written in English, so they will be of interest to English speakers. Instructions to get articles are available here.
    Journals of JSAI:
The JSAI Journal now contains announcements, tutorial papers, and articles on AI-related topics. Though almost all articles in JSAI journals are in Japanese, all authors are required to provide abstracts of theirs in English. The JSAI journal tables of contents since vol.11 no.3 are available in English. Some of the abstracts of the technical papers carried in the JSAI journal (before technical papers were separated into the Transactions of the JSAI) are also available in English.
    JSAI announcement mailing list:
We manage a mailing list to announce AI related conferences or workshops. CFPs can be circulated to thousands of Japanese AI researchers.
