The AI group at the University of Manchester conducts internationally-renowned research in a number of areas. We have a high emphasis on interdisciplinary collaborations, contributing knowledge across subject borders into biology, hardware technologies, robotics, financial markets, mathematical logic, and linguistics, to name but a few. At present, the group consists of 7 academic staff, 4 full-time research staff, and 22 full-time PhD students. The group receives funding from several different research councils and foundations, including EPSRC, BBSRC, Nuffield Foundation, and the National Heart Research Fund. In addition, we are always open to industrial collaborations and consultancy.

What is Artificial Intelligence?
By Jack Copeland
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is usually defined as the science of making computers do things that require intelligence when done by humans. AI has had some success in limited, or simplified, domains. However, the five decades since the inception of AI have brought only very slow progress, and early optimism concerning the attainment of human-level intelligence has given way to an appreciation of the profound difficulty of the problem.
What is Intelligence?
Quite simple human behaviour can be intelligent yet quite complex behaviour performed by insects is unintelligent. What is the difference? Consider the behaviour of the digger wasp, Sphex ichneumoneus . When the female wasp brings food to her burrow, she deposits it on the threshold, goes inside the burrow to check for intruders, and then if the coast is clear carries in the food. The unintelligent nature of the wasp's behaviour is revealed if the watching experimenter moves the food a few inches while the wasp is inside the burrow checking. On emerging, the wasp repeats the whole procedure: she carries the food to the threshold once again, goes in to look around, and emerges. She can be made to repeat this cycle of behaviour upwards of forty times in succession. Intelligenceconspicuously absent in the case of

AIAI is a technology transfer organisation that promotes the application of Artificial Intelligence research for the benefit of commercial, industrial, and government clients. AIAI has considerable experience of working with small innovative companies, and with research groups in larger corporations. AIAI specialises in Intelligent Systems - systems making use of the knowledge of experts, or systems that learn.
The AI technologies AIAI transfers to commerce and industry are:
  • case-based reasoning: a technique for utilising past experiences and existing corporate resources such as databases to guide diagnosis and fault finding; genetic algorithms: an adaptive search technique with very broad applicability in scheduling, optimization, and model adaptation; planning and workflow: the modelling, task setting, planning, execution, monitoring and coordination of activities;

    Introduction General People Education Research The department of Artificial intelligence consists of several research groups: The Agent Systems group contains a few sub-disciplines, namely, Behavioural Dynamics, Other Disciplines, Business Application Areas and Methodology.
    All these sub-groups have in common that they do research in designing intelligent computer systems in which agents are involved. Computational Intelligence is a fairly new name covering a fairly new field. There is no consensus (yet) on what computational intelligence exactly is, but there is a widely accepted view on which areas belong to it: evolutionary computing, fuzzy computing and neurocomputing. The World Congress on Computational Intelligence held every four years (1994 Orlando, 1998 Anchorage, 2002 Honolulu) consists of three tracks, the IEEE International Conference on Evolutionary Computing, Fuzzy Computing, and Neurocomputing.
    Enclosed in the name computational intelligence is a `message', according to scientific folklore it is chosen to indicate the link to and the difference with artificial intelligence. While some techniques within computational intelligence are often counted as artificial intelligence techniques (e.g. genetic algorithms, or neural networks) there is a clear difference between these techniques and traditional, logic based artificial intelligence techniques. In general, typical artificial intelligence techniques are top-to-bottom where, i.e., the structure of models, solutions, etc. is imposed from above. Computational intelligence techniques are generally bottom-up, where order and structure emerges from an unstructured beginning.

    artificial intelligence Last modified: Tuesday, February 10, 2004 The branch of computer science concerned with making computers behave like humans. The term was coined in 1956 by John McCarthy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Artificial intelligence includes
  • games playing: programming computers to play games such as chess and checkers
  • expert systems programming computers to make decisions in real-life situations (for example, some expert systems help doctors diagnose diseases based on symptoms)
  • natural language programming computers to understand natural human languages
  • neural networks Systems that simulate intelligence by attempting to reproduce the types of physical connections that occur in animal brains
  • robotics programming computers to see and hear and react to other sensory stimuli Currently, no computers exhibit full artificial intelligence (that is, are able to simulate human behavior). The greatest advances have occurred in the field of games playing. The best computer chess programs are now capable of beating humans. In May, 1997, an IBM super-computer called
