En 1881 se trasladó a Estocolmo, y bajo la supervisión de Erik Edlung, llevó a cabo investigaciones sobre la polarización eléctrica y la conductividad de las disoluciones. En 1883, Arrhenius propuso que ciertas sustancias (electrólitos) se convertían en activas y conductoras (iones) cuando se hallaban en disolución; en el caso de los ácidos y las bases, su fuerza dependía directamente del grado de disociación que presentaban. Publicó Investigaciones sobre la conductividad galvánica de los electrólitos. Trabajó en Europa con los más eminentes físico-químicos de la época como Ostwald, Boltzmann y Van´t Hoff, entre otros. En 1903 fue galardonado con el Premio Nobel de Química.

In essence, acids and bases are a way of classifying substances according to a very special form of reaction, namely the exchange of protons ebetween chemical compounds. For more information please consult that entry. The historic evolution of the concepts 'acid' and 'base' is another topic altogether. That's what this entry is about. In a first attempt to characterise substances, the concepts of acids and bases were loosely defined as substances that change some properties of water. Much later (in the 19th Century) the composition of acids and bases was elucidated, bringing a very narrow definition of acids and bases. These concepts evolved even further to become broader again, yet still very fuzzily defined. These concepts are a very useful tool in chemical reasoning. Nowadays, virtually anything can be seen as an acid or a base. In the Beginning The starting point for most of the scientific historical evolutions is, as usual, the Mediterranean region in BC-times, Greece in particular. There, some smart people were trying to unravel nature's secrets. One first step in that direction was to sort all kinds of substances in an attempt to characterise nature.

The greenhouse effect and global warming are frequently in the news. Most scientists now accept that increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels will result in a rise in temperature. The results of global warming are still being debated but even politicians are now alert to the problem. The existence of the greenhouse effect was first recognised a hundred years ago by the Swedish scientist, Svante August Arrhenius. Fourth Class
The battle for ions

Christiane found university studies in Frankfurt, rather dull until she rediscovered her love of biology. The chance came to join one of the first biochemistry courses at Tübingen so at the age of 22 she left her large family and settled in rooms in the old town with no hot water or central heating. Christiane was soon involved in the new methods of finding the sequence of genes in DNA, but by the end of her research for her doctorate in 1973 she was rather bored. She wanted to investigate how genes affected the development of organisms and found that the fruit fly, Drosophila, was a good subject to study. Christiane moved to Basel in Switzerland to work for Walter Gehring, a fruit fly expert, and met Eric Wieschaus. Wieschaus soon moved to Zurich while Christiane investigated the mutated fruit flies.
