b iography... home Arrhenius, Svante August (1859-1927) was a Swedish physical chemist who first explained that in an electrolyte (a solution of a chemical dissolved in water) the dissolved substance is dissociated into electrically charged ions. The electrolyte conducts electricity because the ions migrate through the solution. Although later modified, Arrhenius' theory of conductivity in solutions has stood the test of time. It was a major contribution to physical chemistry, ultimately acknowledged by the award to Arrhenius of the 1903 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Arrhenius was born in Uppsala on 19 February 1859, the son of a surveyor and estate manager who was also a supervisor at the local university. He was a brilliant student, entering Uppsala University at the age of 17 to study chemistry, physics and mathematics. After graduating in 1878, he stayed to write his doctoral thesis, but became dissatisfied with the teaching at Uppsala and went to Stockholm to study solutions and electrolytes under Erik Edlund (1819-1888). In 1884 he submitted his thesis, which contained the basis of the dissociation theory of electrolytes (although he did not at that time use the term dissociation), together with many other novel theories which aroused only suspicion and doubt in his superiors. The largely theoretical document was not welcomed by the academics, who were devoted experimentalists;

Arrhenius, Svante August (1859-1927)
Arrhenius, Svante August 19th Century Born: Wik near Uppsala (Sweden), 19 February 1859
Died: Stockholm (Sweden), 2 October 1927 Arrhenius was a brilliant student who learned to read at the age of three and graduated from secondary school as the youngest and brightest in his class. University studies in chemistry, physics and mathematics then followed in Uppsala where he also received his doctoral degree in 1884. His thesis on the galvanic conduction of electrolytes marked a breakthrough in chemistry because it explained the conductivity of the electrolytes by dissociation into positive and negative ions. This revolutionary theory was met with much opposition but became gradually accepted. The early proponents of the theory were W. Ostwald and J.H. vant Hoff who together with Arrhenius are considered as founders of modern physical chemistry. Arrhenius was rewarded in 1903 with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. In 1891 Arrhenius moved to the newly founded University of Stockholm where four years later his post was converted to a professorship in physics. In 1905 Arrhenius was appointed director of the Nobel Institute for Physical Chemistry in Stockholm. During his later years Arrhenius became increasingly interested in cosmic physics and the origin of life on earth. He suggested that life had begun when living spores had wandered through the empty space to earth. He was also one of the first scientists to study the influence of carbon dioxide on the earth's temperature, which is now known as the "greenhouse effect".

    Svante August Arrhenius, pioneering chemist
    Arrhenius won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1903 for his work on the dissociation of molecules into ions; in a second major contribution, he put the law of mass action onto a firm footing with the introduction of the "Arrhenius factor" in the rate equations. This gave the dependence of the rate constants under changes of temperature, and roughly agrees with many experiments. Some modifications to this law have been suggested by the data. In statistical dynamics, a distinct modification of Arrhenius's law is necessary in the simplest, hard-core, model. This was suggested in my paper on cotransport The ratio of the forward and backward reaction rates, as derived from the Arrhenius formula, predicts an exponential law for the dependence on temperature. This prediction of the law agrees with experiment very accurately over ranges of temperature of several orders of magnitude. Physicists will recognise this factor as the Boltzmann factor of a system obeying detailed balance. Ostwald , a Nobel Laureate (1909) in Chemistry for his work on catalysis, was a great admirer of Arrhenius, about whom more can be found here Go to my HOME PAGE for more links.

Born near Uppsala, he was educated at the University of Uppsala and received his Ph.D. in 1884. While still a student, he studied the conductive properties of electrolytic (charge-conducting) solutions . In his doctoral thesis he formulated the theory of electrolytic dissociation . This theory holds that in electrolytic solutions, the dissolved chemical compounds in the solution are dissociated into ions , even when there is no current flowing through the solution. Arrhenius also postulated that the degree of dissociation increases as the solution becomes more dilute, a hypothesis that later turned out to be true only for weak electrolytes. His theory was initially thought to be wrong, and his thesis was given the lowest possible passing grade. Later, however, Arrhenius's theory of electrolytic dissociation became generally accepted, and eventually became one of the cornerstones of modern

    Actually, how long have people been active in science? The answer is the same for both women and men as long as we have been human. One of the defining marks of humanity is our ability to affect and predict our environment. Science - the creation of structure for our world - technology - the use of structure in our world - and mathematics - the common language of structure - all have been part of our human progress, through every step of our path to the present. Women and men together have researched and solved each emerging need.
